11 months without a period
« on: August 18, 2020, 04:17:25 PM »

So I’ve 1 month to go then I can say I’m officially in menopause. Question is, is it normal to still stomach cramps?  I never got cramps when I had my periods so this is weird.  Hormones raging, sweats shocking, beyond tired and to be honest I’ve feel like I’ve hit a wall at 100mph.

No I’m trying to get through it , for now.   I have a more than useless GP who says dosent want to give me it and due to covid I can’t see someone face to face. I went to my local female clinic over a year ago and they send prescription info to doc but he just kept saying “are you aware of statistics “ etc etc. I was hitting head off of wall !!!

Hi Bradenton69, hang in there, fingers crossed it's not period cramp. Hormone changes can wreck havoc on the body, all sorts of symptoms are possible. Once you are post menopause the hormonal fluctuations will decrease and if you decide to take HRT you will find it easier to settle on one specific regime because your own hormones won't get in the way.

Ring your surgery and ask for referral to a menopause clinic.  Not a gynaecologist as they know as little as many GPs ...... getting advice on HRT gives you a choice: yeah or nay.

Menopause is natural but we don't have to suffer  ;)

I will be 50 in October and I haven't had a period since January this year.  I hope that it will continue like this because I want this menopause thing to be over sooner rather than later.  I don't want to  disappoint you but some ladies have had their periods come back after 15 months.  One would have thought that after 12 months without a period the menopause has occurred but, apparently, it's not always the case.  I hope mine won't ever come back.

Some find keeping a mood/food/symptom diary useful.

let us know how you get on.

Menopause is never over - you just get used to coping and dealing with the different changes it brings. I wasted so much time waiting for things to be over and for me to go back to how I was. The longer you keep your periods the better in some ways, inconvenient though they are, as you still have a reasonable level of oestrogen. Mind you I started HRT at 53 so I don't know how my menopause would have ended up.

Tax, menopause is permanent but the symptoms shouldn't.  What has changed for you then?  What was it like before?  All the pistmeno ladies I know no longer have any issues.  Maybe it depends on the woman.  Some might have symptoms that are lingering while others don't.  If meopause is never over how come there are some postmeo ladies out there who feel great? What made you decide to take HRT?  What stage are you at?

I can’t believe this is forever either  :'( there is no way I could cope with symptoms indefinitely.  I have only just started HRT at 50 and peri and it already seems like a lifetime. I too have spoken to ladies and members of my family who have come out the other end leading normal lives without HRT.

I meant that menopause means the cessation of periods - that's forever. The symptoms of fluctuating hormones do decrease as your hormone levels drop and stabilise  but that then can bring other symptoms such as bladder and vaginal issues, lack of energy etc. more likelihood of heart disease etc.  I just queried the fact that you are waiting for the menopause to be over. Maybe you meant peri-menopause to be over?

The stage I'm at is post-menopause as I am 66. I have been on HRT for the past thirteen years and things for me are good. Without HRT they are not so good and when I stopped it - reluctantly - was when I suffered a uterine and bladder prolapse which led to a hysterectomy. I would like to stay on it indefinitely. I started it because at the age of 53, when I was back to almost regular periods after nine months without, my sweats were drenching me every twenty minutes and it was becoming increasingly difficult to carry on with my job. It was not something I ever thought I would take though. I have found that HRT has not been any help, for me, in respect of episodes of anxiety or low mood.

Hi sed. Yes there are many women who don't suffer during peri-menopause and menopause but they tend not to come onto a forum like this so it's easy to think that everyone does have a bad time. Lack of oestrogen does give vaginal symptoms to many women who don't necessarily count this as having post-meno problems thinking that menopause means just hot flushes. I have a work colleague whose periods just stopped when she was 49. She is 62 now and suffering from insomnia, bladder issues and bad joint/muscle pain. Her enlightened doctor has started her on a low dose HRT and she is feeling so much better. She had not put her symptoms down to menopause never having suffered anything when her periods stopped. I hope HRT helps you over this tricky bit.

Thanks Taz2, I know everyone differs and just hope it works for me as my main symptom is anxiety and all it’s dreadful physical symptoms.  Only on my first few weeks of HRT so know very early to suggest it won’t work for it.  Can only but hope!

I know that others have found HRT helped with anxiety symptoms so fingers crossed for you. Are you on any medication for the anxiety? It's such a horrible thing to suffer from especially if it's not something that you used to have.

It had been suggested but declined.  Now I am not so sure but just trying to get my head around the side effects of these Evorel patches - the nausea is awful.  I don’t think I could cope starting an AD at the same time and having to deal with that breaking-in period as well.
