Fizzy legs
« on: July 30, 2020, 03:26:11 PM »

Hi, I came on this forum to see if I could find an answer to a question, but haven’t been able to find the exact problem, so here goes.
When I get a hot flush at night I get a really unpleasant sensation in my legs from top to bottom. The only way to describe it is it’s like my blood is fizzing. Not painful but unpleasant. I have to move around. As I said it only happens at night when I’m laying down in bed. Doesn’t happen if I’m sitting up. Very weird. Once I’ve had one it’s impossible to get straight back to sleep as I’m wide awake.
Does this happen to anyone else.?  I have read about restless legs but that seems to happen without a hot flush.
Thankyou

Hi and welcome BellasNan, it sounds like RLS. It's possible that both conditions are caused by vasomotor issues induced by hormones (pregnancy), so it's not uncommon for them to overlap during menopause. Have you had blood tests for iron levels recently? Low levels can cause RLS.

Hi Bellasnan.

I get that too, feels like fizz, or creepy crawlies in my veins. Very uncomfortable.
I usually get it just in my calf's, the other night when I had it, it was all my legs. Both of them. Although the right leg was worse.
Maybe the hot flush is just a coincidence at the same time, I don't have hot flushes, I think, I get RLS because I'm always on my feet. 🤷‍♀️ Who knows.?
I also have an achey back a lot of the time, ( slipped disc years ago) and I'm thinking it has something to do with that, like nerve damage or something.
All I do is rest my legs on an extra pillow in bed. But whatever you do, it doesn't go away does it?
Xx

No not had a blood test for a few years. It’s really weird as I only get the symptoms a few seconds after the flush starts and only when lying in bed.

Restless leg syndrome: I had this from an early age, eating bananas several times a day cured it.  Lack of potassium.

I would spend hours with legs up the wall - although I am aware of it in the day it's troublesome once I get into bed so that was the way I got to sleep.  Of course, the legs wouldn't stay there .....

Fizzing for me is a course of adrenaline, feels like hot water going through my veins.

Hello BellasNan and welcome to the forum.

Your post reminded me that I haven't has restless legs for ages  but they occurred  every evening at one time. I did have an iron infusion about eighteen months ago so they may have been due to low iron.

I sometimes get a shaking sensation in my right leg when I'm having a bit of a flush but it doesn't last long and only happens during the day. Could your fizzy legs be caused by  a night sweat?

Wishing you well.

K.

Hi Bellasnan,  I have fizzy legs and RLS too.  Very annoying. Both come and go and, I believe, are linked to anxiety.  No answers,  but it is very common.

I also take 'nurofen' for the restless legs, I needed to last night but was too tired to get out of bed for a drink  :-\.  I am aware of the sensations in the day but they become obvious as soon as I go to bed at night.  Never troublesome when I sleep in the day, go figure  :-\

May I giggle ........ does it help though?  Not the cat, hanging the legs over the edge?  How about up the wall?  That helps for a while.

I had a bout of RLS in the spring, so annoying. I had uncontrollable urges to move one leg (different leg, different night) and poor dh couldn't fall asleep I kept moving so much.  I tried stretching out the legs before bed and sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.  Eventually it went away on it's own...knock on wood.

I started my weight loss with Weight Watchers about the same time so maybe that triggered it at the outset and then it settled down when I changed my diet.  I began watching my portions and eating more veggies and fruit, more lean protein.  I added greek yogurt as a new staple. I haven't had an episode for a while now.
