How to get a good nights sleep
« on: July 22, 2020, 12:17:04 PM »

Hi there, I’m new to the forum so not sure if I am posting in the correct place. I have been suffering with insomnia for over a year now and have yet to find a solution. I have tried a couple of HRT options both of which didn’t help with the sleeping. I am now thinking of trying the patch and tablet combination. Just wondering if anyone can suggest a HRT that worked for them with sleeping. Thank you

I've been on evorel sequi and oestrogel and both stopped my insomnia. My worst symptoms were anxiety and insomnia and they did take 3 months to go. I still don't sleep as well as I used to and am more easily disturbed but ge really I do get enough sleep now. Have your other meno symptoms gone? If it's a meno symptom they should all work if you have the right dose. If you're on a conti regime it's possible the progesterone doesn't agree with you.

stop worrying about it ;-).  Learn deep breathing from the toes to the neck.  Breath in, stretch muscles, hold, relax.  I have found soft music useful too.

I was on Femoston conti, this took away the hot flushes at night for a little while but then they came back and the sleeping was better only for a couple of weeks. I don’t know what the first HRT was called but was similar to Femoston, but gave me very sore breasts all the time so I came off that too, and the sleeping didn’t get any better. Someone suggested cannabis oil to try first, has anyone had any luck with that? I am now still having the hot flushes which I think is what is waking me at night. I have tried CBT training also with mindfulness and although it taught me to be more in the moment, it didn’t help with sleeping.

Lack of sleep is awful, restless legs kept me awake last night despite 'nurofen' and I really need to drop off right now  :-\

A change of temperature wakes me even though I don't have sweats, even with the windows open I'm chilly/warm/chilly  ::) which breaks my sleep pattern.  Add to that busy involved dreams  >:(

There are several forms of HRT to try ;-)

Do U keep a mood/food/symptom diary to chart progress?

Maybe decide which symptom you would like to ease first?  Then look in the search box .

Yes that’s a good idea, it’s definitely the sleeping which would be first as it’s affecting my quality of life making other symptoms appear due to lack of sleep

It can be if the sleep pattern is affected, waking with dreams is problematic.

My dreams are caused by the medication I take.

I could go to sleep OK then wake between 2 and 4 am and spend the rest of the night tossing and turning, worrying about everything. Lack of sleep is so debilitating, it's why they use it for torture! It's impossible to feel OK when you can't sleep and it makes everything else worse. As your flushes returned you didn't have enough oestrogen and should have been given a higher dose. No experience of CBT but sleeping pills didn't work well, I slept OK but was still half asleep the next day.

Melatonin's helps me when the days before my period I hardly sleep at all. I can fall asleep much easier. Side effect is vivid dreams ( James Bond is nothing compared to me in my dreams). Also waking up early. Just don't take it late at night, it stays at least 8 hours in your system. And not recommended to be taken regularly. Best ist to ask your GP about it.

My sleep goes in fits and starts. I've got a mirena and I'm swapping between oestrogen patches and gel depends on what my chemist can get.
I occasionally use 10 mg Phenegan if I know I'm not driving the following day as it does leave me a bit groggy.
I've started taking Together health night time blend. It contains 5htp,magnesium and hops plus a small amount of valerian. I'm sleeping from about 11 pm to just before 5am. I feel my sleep is deeper but still the odd weird dreams but I do feel Ive had a decent amount of sleep BUT last night I was awake a few times but I'd swapped from the patches to gel so think that needs to settle! If you're on antidepressants,it's advisable not to take 5htp due to seratoin syndrome. I've also ordered some time released melatonin to try as the week before my period is when my sleep pattern is not great
It's awful when you can't sleep and the rest of the house is! I've seen some beautiful sunrises recently at Dawn's fart!
My husband loves the  Calm app and he raves about their sleep stories if he wakes up.
I've also cut out caffeine and alcohol too to help. Plus good sleep hygiene- no screens an hour before etc. I found that a warm bath shower and sleepy body lotion by lush is lovely. A pillow spray- I use one from Avon or if I'm feeling flush This works pillow spray and pulse rub - normally a lot cheaper in TK Maxx. I've also tried yellow tinted glasses but that didn't work.
Wishing you all the best

Thank you for your advice, it seems like you have got a good night time routine. I also try to not look at screens/ have a bath etc, sprays but I still wake up. I am ok getting to sleep but just wake up very early and can’t get back to sleep, I was even listening to the shipping forecast 😂, having said that I slept ok last night with the help of a nytol, so a lot more positive today

It's hard to gauge what's best to do with what to take because you don't want to get used to it.
Last night I woke up a few times and I was fully awake by 5am so I got up and put the washer on etc. >:( >:( >:( :(
I'd love my deep sleeps back.
