A little gel on my bits?
« on: July 11, 2020, 01:17:17 PM »

I use estrogel but recently have needed something extra due to dryness of vaginal area mainly the outer. I previously tried vagifem and got thrush plus other unwanted side effects so I stopped. Ive just given it another try and got migraines and excessive urination so I'm too sensitive to something in vagifem.
I've read about ovestin cream which I'm going to ask to try but I'm not in a rush to get to the gp surgery at the moment due to Covid so I was wondering if a tiny smidge of estrogel could work?

Do not put Oestrogel on your vulva. It is not designed for use there and will sting like blazes. If you want to try Ovestin the surgery would probably prescribe this by telephone consultation.

One of our members, Jane Lewis, put up a link to an excellent video about vaginal oestrogen that she made with Dr Sarah Ball. I will try to find the thread and bump it for you.

Hello Jaylow.

Have you experimented with vaginal moisturisers? Boots sell Replens and YesVM is available on prescription but it can also be ordered through the pharmacy or directly online.

The moisturisers could  be all you need and may tide you over until you can see your GP.

Hope this helps and take care.

Why would 'vagifem' give thrush? which thrives on sugars  :-\

I find that KY Jelly is best for my outer areas using 'ovestin' internally to my regime.

Thanks for replies ladies.

I don't know why it gave me thrush, but it did. This time round I'm experiencing different but equally unpleasant side effects.

And thrush is an undesirable side effect according to the patient information leaflet, 'Vulvovaginal mycotic infection'. Mycotic means fungus.
https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/5719#UNDESIRABLE_EFFECTS
It is listed as "uncommon". I note that the number of participants in the trial of the 10 mcg dose was small.

I switched from vagifem to estriol cream as inititally the vagifem caused burning. After improving I switched back and am now able to tolerate the vagifem. I have a couple of estriol tubes of cream so use a small amount externally twice a week, in addition to the vagiifem. Estriol cream is very weak. This seems to help me.

Not sure if it's coincidence but since I started Oestrodose gel 2 months ago I have had the most awful bladder symptoms. I was great for 8 months on patches. I've also dried up down there and even putting vagifem in with the applicator burns  :-\.

I wonder if this is a side effect of using the gel as all this improved dramatically on patches ?.

The mycotic infection would have been present and aggravated by insertion of the applicator.  It is unlikely to cause thrush per se.  Thrush lives in the back passage and is passed forwards by lazy hygiene.  Or as in my case, happened after I stopped taking The Pill.  Within 3 weeks I had an itch too high up to scratch and the Gyane Registrar diagnoses thrush due to the vaginal secretion being altered.  I can't remember what it was but it was a pessary.  And the advice 'try not to scratch'.

So it stands to reason that anything foreign inserted into the vagina may well alter the acidity = thrush-like symptoms.  Aggravation by the applicator rubbing against already dry skin will cause itchyness.  The idea may be to insert as deep as it is comfortable and increase the depth as symptoms ease.  Some are sensitive to the fillers and coating on some products which will cause symptoms.

lillith221 - dried up down there ? = atrophy.  Maybe get 'ovestin' which is delivered into the vagina slightly differently - I use it at night so there is no discharge.  Some find that 'yes' or 'sylc' products help on the outer labia etc..

I understand that it exists in the digestive tract and bowel, resting in the anus.  Usually non-problematic but certainly an opportunist when the body is low.  Thrives on sugar.  Also babies can be prone to mouth candida which must be awful  :-\ ............ I believe too that some cancer treatments can cause it ..........

Which doesn't explain why I had it the first time after stopping The Pill  :-\ nor the 2nd time when I was starved for 3 days prior to removal of my appendix  :-\.  I had a drip with Antibiotics and pain relief ......... so when I have elective surgery I use LIVE yoghurt, eaten and applied prior to the operation and thus far, that has worked for me.

4 me it's about keeping the whole vaginal area supple to avoid it drying out.
