They are shy and flighty.  As well as being pretty.

Two hedgehogs over night : one with a closed left eye and a larger 'tide line' of soft fur beneath the ****les.

Eating as much as they wanted then toddling off.  So ours don't stuff on live meal worms but eat 'enough'.

My mistletoe cactus is in flower  8). It's a plant that looks like a bad hair day  ;D ....... which I rescued from Mum's about 12 years ago.

Sadly found a young hedgehog that had died in the night, still soft.  Full of fleas of course.  Probably a late arrival ......... under a pile of leaves .

Are you sure it was dead?

Yep.  Nipped his back legs hard.  Eyes closed.  Tweaked the nose. No reactions.  It's in a tub so should it 'wake' ..........

If it were a kitten it would go down my shirt next to my skin, all those fleas however would not be welcome ;-)

DH checked the night time trail cameras and there haven't been any sightings of such a young hedgehog all year in our back garden  :-\

It's unusual for a hedgehog to have fleas so it shows it was struggling poor mite. Was it curled up with no face showing?

I spotted a youngster making a nest out of forthysia leaves in one of the feeding boxes on camera. This was at 8.30 a.m. so not the time it should have been doing that. I sought advice from our local rescue. Was asked to watch for it emerging later and to weigh it. She came snuffling out at 4.30 p.m. Beautiful little face. Weighed in at 176g well below the minimum of 400g needed in November. She's doing well in rescue where she will stay until she's at least 600g. She did have an internal parasite burden and would not have survived the cold weather of last week. She is one of over 80 hedgies being over wintered in that particular rescue.

Completely curled up.  Don't think that he had been there very long.

They are so so pretty :-))).

They usually uncurl if dead. One way to tell is to firmly stroke the spines. Even in hibernation there should be a slight ripple over the spines. One was brought into rescue last week found frozen on a muddy footpath. Even the rescue thought it might be dead but it wasn't. After a few hours it was seen to be breathing. Another one saved. 😍
