Half a blue egg shell on the path ? blackbird ?

Most likely.

I had two hedgehogs in my back garden last night. They were making a very odd noise. Is it too early for breeding?

Nope.  They can be territorial too.  Cherish them Baarnacle.

Two grey squirrels make very good slippers  :whist:

Exactly the right time for breeding. The male mates with as many females as he can. It can take up to four hours to persuade each one  ;D

My neighbour had a pheasant lay 10 eggs in her garden, 8 have survived and they look so cute. It certainly brightened my day seeing them today  :)

OOhhh - as long as the fox or badger doesn't find them a real photo opportunity  :-*

Our female blackbird was calling her fledgings out but they weren't keen  ;D oh the noise  :o.  She picked up meal worms and flew off then made that noise .......

Mating.  It's that time of year  ;D it's usually the vixens .

"Foxes scream and bark to communicate with each other. This becomes more common during mating season, which is at its peak in January. During this period in particular, foxes will scream at each other as a territory warning, and female foxes will make loud noises when mating.:

Less people around?  Less noise pollution so that the vixen travels further?

It could be that someone's dog being taken for a walk had got too close so was seen as a threat. Anything too near to the den really. The mating screams and distress/warning screams can sound the same. Is it all quiet now?
