Mr Pigeon has had a morning snack, sat about for an hour and has now gone. Well I can't see him for now anyway.
Hopefully he is now on his way home.

Spoke too soon. The daft bird is back. We never took his ring number and now we can't catch him. Hubby chased him around the garden with an old towel and missed  ;D
He is now sitting on top of the greenhouse looking very wary.

Need to sneak up on him when he lands.

At this rate I'm going to have to charge him for B&B

Taz2 what a special and kind lady you are, that was such a lovely thing to do for the little hedgehog.  When we were out for a walk last week we found a little bird on the ground, later we identified it as a gold crest.  He was quite tame, and sat on husbands hand for a few seconds , he then flew off but his flying was a bit hit and miss !!  We eventually persuaded him into the bushes and hopefully he got reunited with the rest of his family as Im sure he came out of a nearby nest.

Hi Evelyn - thank you! I volunteer for the local wildlife hospital and often have to collect injured wildlife from people who either are too wary to pick up injured wildlife or haven't got transport. I never go anywhere without my wildlife rescue kit in the car boot.

If the Goldcrest was able to fly then it would have left the nest but it sounds as if it may have been stunned by a car - they can often fly into the side of a car and because they are so light tend to bounce off rather than sustain life threatening injuries. How lucky that you came along when you did to put it safely back into the bushes.

Sorry about the pigeon Mrs Brown - hopefully he will soon be on his way.

Keep feeding the pigeon Mbrown - if he's wary then he's improving.

The advice from the RPRA is to stop feeding after forty eight hours and he should then eventually decide to make his way home.

Or join a wild flock.  We had 3 here a few years ago, there had been a huge storm across the Channel which had blown lots of quite expensive racers off course ......... they stayed around for months.  As I knew that they were un-likely to be kept if returned I didn't bother catching them.

OK - anyone have a hedgehog 'house' and how to stop rats taking over?  In November I racked piles of leaves under some piles of logs beneath our very large yew tree so it's a dry area, but have no idea if anything went there as it's difficult for me to get to ..........

As for feeding - we have a large garden with a few slugs/snails so I have been putting out live meal worms around 9.30 and there's always fresh water for the birds.  I see from the various catalogues that 'food' is available but I'm sure that the local cats would eat it B4 the hog arrived and do they really need mixed grain with a few meal worms in it!  There is access to 1 of the ponds the other two are built up so a hog would need to really want to climb!

Once the warmer evenings arrive I am looking forwards to sitting out, listening to them rustling in the shrubbery B4 appearing on our patio :-)

Driving back through Costwold country today and saw a red kite :). Have only seen these a few times ever and always get excited. Our bird of prey in these parts is the ubiquitous buzzard, the odd kestrel and sparrowhawk, and the occasional peregrine (and once a merlin!).

Sad story about your hog Taz  :(

I keep offering to send you some of our Red Kites Hurdity  ;D  They have taken over from the buzzards here. So many visit the local town - over 150 fly in each day for food. My little cat ducks whenever they fly over and makes a dash for the cat flap  ;D

i think you've made him too comfortable Mrs B.

My son and I sat watching a squirrel make multiple attempts to access a feeder on a pole. It has a barrel cage over the feeder and has a spring that retracts around the pole so access is almost impossible. It repeatedly leapt about eight feet from the fence in an attempt to mount the pole. It was like it was being shot out of a canon. In the last attempt it managed to land on the cage, before we swung open the doors and scared the little fella to death and he shot off. They are the most determined little critters!

Well Rocky...yes we gave him a name isn't around at the moment. He certainly seemed to be growing in strength and got fed up with us trying to catch him.
Hopefully he is either off on his way home or will be tucked up somewhere warm for the night. What's the betting I open the door last thing tonight to let the dog out and he will be on the patio.

One of the best places to see Red Kites is Dumfies and Galloway especially around Kirkudbright. They have feeding stations and it's quite a spectacular sight watching them swoop in to be fed.
