I think it's because this is the first time in almost 200 years that the water has come over the very top of the drop instead of partway down.

"Storm Desmond briefly created a new record-breaking waterfall as it sent torrents cascading over a famous landmark for the first time in centuries.
Malham Cove, a limestone formation in the Yorkshire Dales, is usually dry as water flows through cracks and gullies to its foot well before the cliff edge and a drop of around 260ft."

That's what 'they' are reporting but have they been there every day all day  ::) ……….. my sister did a geology survey there in the 1970s so must ask her when I send the next letter.

Had a lovely (but windy and chilly) few moments at the top of our orchard as the sun was setting this evening. Have been busy working - out this morning for a long morning and sorting out stuff for the rest of the week, but it's been a beautiful sunny day and I caught the last moments. The fieldfares chattered above me as they ate the last mouthfuls of apple of the day, the long-tailed tits tweeted past me in their flock and I watched a nuthatch high up a tree furiously banging at a hazelnut (I presume) for ages as the light failed. I stayed up there until I was too cold - but it was good for the soul being on my own up there :)

Took the dog for an early morning walk yesterday and had a flock of 7 long tailed tits following us down the lane for about quarter of a mile.  Beautiful.

They are really pretty - I love it when they descend on the trees in the garden morning and evening.

We had a beautiful bird visit yesterday afternoon but one I wasn't best pleased to see. A female Sparrowhawk. She missed a dove but spent some minutes searching for it in all of the bushes and behind the fence. We haven't seen one for a couple of years now although they used to breed a few hundred yards from the house and bring the youngsters to practice their hunting techniques on the birds on our feeders early each summer. Fantastic to watch but still sad when they take a bird. Maybe she was just passing through!

That would be good if it's just a one off.
However now she knows where your feeders are  :-\

I always think they look as if they belong in a warmer climate - too pretty for a muddy Welsh lane!

2-day - 29 Dec. 2015 - hellebores in full flower in our garden; crocii up ………. forsythia everywhere, most un-expectedly, small pink buds of summer flowering honeysuckle already, lots of daffs in the town and not growing in a sheltered spot ………. I need to cut back the autumn flowering clematis for the compost heap.
