They are very territorial and once a territory is established it remains theirs for the rest of their life - at least for part of each year http://www.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/discoverandlearn/birdguide/name/b/blackbird/territory_and_social_behaviour.aspx

Ours spend lots of time fighting and defending their spot against each other and the starlings nip in and take all of the best grub while they're sparring off against each other.

Whilst eating breakfast by the ponds this morning DH noticed a damsel fly emerging  :) - he has taken a few photos and it has now flown off.

Thanks Taz, this one is quite a bully, he doesn't seem to be eating anything in our garden, just chasing off the starlings so they can't have it either ;)

Neighbour's cat caught an adult black bird earlier, fortunately it wriggled hard enough so that cat let it go  :o and BB flew off squawking

Are robins a sign of anything?
I've always seen one on my walk each day.

They are a sign that things are as they should be. Loads of them around. Not on any endangered list thankfully. There are over 6 million breeding pairs in the UK so you will see them in most places.

My friends the parakeets have a nest in our building. They got into a "dead space" vent by lifting it with their beaks. I can hear the babies squeaking and starting to flap wings from under our lounge stairs but haven't seen them at all ( can see it up high on the building from the garden).
I hope I see them leave home. This week doesn't look like sitting in the sun weather though.
The mum and dad have fascinating run ins with the new tenants' cat. It sits in their 1st floor window (sash open) and the birds fly at it - protecting their young. Cat then reacts....
Poor cat is left alone so much but at least it has something to do now! (it can't get at the birds nor they at it).

And OH coming home at 9pm on his bike last week saw a newborn fox cub with its mum.
Lots of them live in the scruffy wild bits near us but you seldom see babies.

Ooooh. I scrolled down and ahead at the baby fox in a bowl too.
Baby parakeets all very quiet now. Hopefully not gone, just sleeping! So hope I see them. I didn't last year. Wonder if it's the same parents?

Baby birds usually react when the parent arrives with grub.  ;)
We have had our camping interrupted by tawny owls - the female being the noisiest  ::) : as well as deer barking in the woods - of course, I was dozing and nearly asleep when it began.
Several damsel flies have hatched and flown whilst we've been away
Everything in our garden has 'come on'  :o

lived here 9 years but just saw my very first great tit and chaffinch in the park. And a squirrel lying on his side, "casting couch" style, waiting to see if anyone offered him a nut (or her a nut?!).  :D

The front of our building has baby parakeets in it as well! I saw them being fed today - well, I saw the parent opening the flap and pushing food inside but couldn't see the recipients. Don't even know how many young they have, or if it's just one at a time?
