I had lifted all my spring bulbs and put them in the greenhouse to dry. When hubby went to bring them out snuggled underneath was a baby frog. He looked at us, we looked at him and then as hubby tried to lift him he squeezed under the smallest gap and hopped off to a sheltered corner. Guess he liked the warmth in there. Never know he might be back tonight.

Hope he comes back honeybun - he'll be a great help eating the greenhouse pests. Maybe he's one of last years "crop".

Not sure, but he was little and very cute. Quite a few of my neighbours have ponds and one has a hot tub  ;D
Hopefully he will stick around. The nights have been so cold so no doubt he felt warmer in there.

I am so excited - I just have to share my news with you all

Came home today to find 2 baby robins on my lawn, being fed by their parents, little wings flapping like mad! I am so so happy I could burst!

I get great pleasure when the first fledglings are out  -  we saw 3 wrens being fed last year  :-* and know that we have nestlings close by, the amount of adult birds out here for live meal worms means that very soon, they will break out!

I think I might buy some live mealy worms if I can brave it. Do you keep them in the fridge?

Nope.  In a deep tub so that they don't  :o crawl out  ;D ……… I use a Company in Sheffield (name escapes me  ::) ) but they breed various bugs for the live reptile trade.

If you start with meal worms though you need to continue, our birds know when I step outside that they might get fed  ::) ….. I also keep one area of garden wet if the weather is dry, so that the blackbirds can help themselves to garden worms etc..

Oh joy - it's that time of year again. Frantic bird feeding and greater variety of species :)

When my husband woke me with my cup of tea this morning he said - that sounds like a woodpecker (the "chip" call they make), and then saw one arrive on the bird-table (female greater spotted)!

I leapt out of bed before even drinking my tea (most unlike me as it normally takes two mugs for me to to stir!), went to the window and there it was about 10 feet away from me pecking away at the hanging peanuts. It stayed for absolutely ages!!

Lots of activity with the sparrow horde as last year and the baby blue-tits and great tits are also feeding too!

I love watching ours to Hurdity even though they have been known to make off with eggs and nestlings. Our tit box has the metal plate inside so she can't enlarge the hole but she did have a try last week. Foiled again  :)

Our baby blue tits have yet to emerge - it's usually another few days here. The first baby starling should arrive this week. Usually it arrives on my son's birthday, which is Wednesday, but last year they were three days early. We will have to put the temporary "cage" up  so that they can feed safely on the ground away from the cats which hide in the undergrowth. It will stay there until the end of July. It doesn't make the garden look very pretty but saves lots of young lives. The cats do try to jump the fence but it gives the birds a precious few seconds to fly off. By the end of next week there should be upwards of twenty noisy, squabbling young starlings. I love watching them.

Whilst clearing out our ponds of blanket weed again I found 3 small 'fly nymphs - not dragons but the other sort  :-\ - DH took  photos and we put them back into the water.

Must order more meal worms in the morning  ;)

We were sitting under our gazebo early evening yesterday and various birds were coming down to feed and bathe.  There was one male blackbird that kept seeing off all the starlings (ignored the doves, pigeons, sparrows and tits) - it was quite amusing, he kept flying down, chasing them all away then he settled himself on the compost heap to keep watch.  There was a bit of a set-to when another male blackbird came along but he saw him off too - I hadn't realised that Blackbirds were so territorial?
