Norfolk are planning a 2nd 'bird fair' event weekend : Sat/Sun. 16th/17th May.  Have a look at web-site for details of ticket prices and venue - I think it will be at Mannington Hall …..

Don't be put off by the 'bird fair' name - because there is a lot of conservation, holidays etc.; anyone near Rutland in August can attend the National Bird Fair, again, a good web-site.  I can feel a camper trip coming on  ;)

We have a lot of buzzards round here and I was walking the dog and saw a funny 'lump' on top of the fence post about 15 feet away - which then took off!  Not seen one that close and low down before.  Amazing sight.

Does anyone else have a lot of starlings?  I read recently that their numbers are supposed to be declining...I don't think they are, I think it's just that they've all moved into my garden  ::) Often have about 25 at one time, which is ok except that they tend to frighten the other birds away.

I didn't do the bird count.  We have varying amounts of birds depending on weather, food availability, who else is feeding in the area.

Have just had/seen the most amazing murmuration of starlings overhead in our small Devon village - never seen the sky so filled with them here (seen this lots in Somerset where I used to work) - they have been gathering in the trees all around which are so full of birds they look like leaves, and the sound of their squawking, and chattering is fantastic!

Was looking for a suitable bird smiley but there doesn't seem to be one :)

We have watched murmurations around the Piers at Aberystwyth and Brighton - a great spectacle!

We have two buzzards that live/hunt in the hills behind us. It's great to watch them slowly circle the skies. We also have a female sparrow hawk.

It's the sea birds that we see most of when we walk.  Cormorants, different kinds of waders, guillemots diving. Also had quite a lot of ducks and swans around just now.

Also got a field full of greylag geese in a nearby field.

2 yellow hammers and a male bullfinch again today

Buzzards 'mew' don't they, I loved seeing them in Wales and can hear them and the kites over head here.

Two herons today - the fields are so waterlogged they have moved into them from the river, so easier to see.

Also found, bizarrely, a very large crab claw in the middle of a field.  Assuming we haven't got crabs in the river, I can only think a carrion bird has collected it from a house or rubbish tip...had to come at least a mile away!  ???

We used to have a heron in the burn opposite our house. It would stand for hours and never move. Great to see though.

I got a bit of a fright tonight. We had a very fat pheasant in the garden. It got a scare too. I scattered out some seed and left it having a good feed. It was obviously hand fed as it ran towards me as I was scattering the seed.
There is a country park next to us that has regular shoots.....this is an escapee. Hope it heads in the right direction.  ::)

Dorothy - could it have been a crayfish claw?

Didn't think of that.  I know there are freshwater crayfish a couple of miles upstream.
