Ours are busy accessing the feeders in POURING rain  >:( ……… let me know about the waxwings, it seems a bit strange as cockerels don't rely on food stuffs whereas flamingoes kept in captivity need coloured foods to keep the feathers pink  ::)

You know how Collar Doves can be a bit irritating with their repetitive calls?
Well we've got the same sort of thing with Buzzards.
There's a couple of young ones which keep circling around calling to stake their territory.

That mewing sound can be a bit monotonous but lovely the first time you hear it.

It is the Cedar Waxwing CLKD - you can read about it here http://www.birdsource.org/ibs/IBSspecies/cedwax/index.html  Sixth paragraph I think.

At the last place we lived some Buzzards arrived, I thought the mewing was very special.
Still do really, it just gets a bit wearing, bit like the Collar Dove call.......

The adult buzzards mew when courting and when they are driving away their young  ;)

It has poured all day and guess who left the lid off the seed/nut bin  >:(

They mew at other times too though - most of the time.. wheeling over the house. Perhaps they are saying "give us some grub"  ;D

we have a mum pigeon on our little flower balcony (house feature rather than real balcony) up here - she blinks nervously at me whenever I open the window. Such a dedicated mum. It'll not end well. The previous 3 pigeon mums who tried it all lost their young to carrion crows.

OH got stung 4x by a worker hornet (the smaller ones) while sitting on the sofa 2 nights ago! It got up his trousers....luckily only to the knee. Very weird.

There was a dead rabbit in the garden - what else can we do?  ;D

I love this short video of ants protecting their herd of aphids from a ladybird. My dad used to do this with a ladybird when I was really young - we spent hours watching them and he explained it like a herd of sheep being attacked by a wolf. It really sparked my interest in the insect world I think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9zTwngwdVc

That's really interesting Taz - never would have thought ants could have dealt with a ladybird.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of bold young robins about? I'm seeing a lot of them, most almost into their adult plumage - they're so bold they almost get under my feet. They've started singing territory song again here, but fairly quietly at the moment. It's lovely.

Yes they are really fearless aren't they? That autumn song is my favourite of all bird songs. It was Tweet of the Day a few weeks ago http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b038qhyz
