That's interesting CLKD - great to think that this years growth may be of use. How much do they pay?  :)

You will need to look at the 2 web-sites, some simply collect, others do pay - but I wouldn't want paying ...... because the clippings will be going into the council waste delivery.

We never get wasps in the house, too many jars of cheap jam outside; plus all the apples/plums/pears for the wasps and butterflies at this time of year  ;)

For others interested there are two companies carrying out these collections.

http://limehurst.co.uk/v2/node/3  and http://www.friendshipestates.co.uk/yew-collection/yew-collection.html

Yew will have to wait till next year now though  :D

They are just so sweet.

I unfortunately saw a dead badger at the side of the road near us. Not often you see them about. Very sad.

We had a walk in our nearby woods yesterday and had another good haul of (edible) fungi - 3 different species of ceps, and some hedgehog fungi. We are eating our way through them and tonight my husband cooked a delicious omelette with them in. He separates the gills (pores) of the ceps from the fleshy bit and dries them (on the Aga) for soups and casseroles - they add a really good flavour.

It's been a great year for fungi and I have seen some species I haven't seen for years including Death Cap, by the side of the road (lane) only about a mile from home.

The fields on the edge of the village had pounds and pounds of field mushrooms earlier too.

OK - So we thought we should start putting nuts out for the birds again.
Last year, our local farming store had been making the point that it would be cheaper to purchase the larger 12 or 20 Kg bags than the 2kg bags we normally get. We got a 20kg bag.
Got it home, left things for a few days as it was mild (12C ish during the day).
OH put some nuts out, I thought they looked a bit blackish, birds ignored them.
It turns out he had put some of old (purchased in March this year) ones out.
We put the new nuts out, and the birds are starting to come back.
Today, Blue tits, Grea tits and Nuthatches. Robins on the ground picking up bits.

We have not got many birds coming to the feeders at the moment. I can see them on the rowan tree eating the last of the berries though so perhaps when they are done I will get my birds back. It's good there has been so much natural food around though but I miss my little birds.

You can have some of mine if you like Honeybun - mine are there all year round and cost such a lot to keep feeding but it's difficult to stop once you start!

The main "culprits" are the goldfinches - normally between 15 and 25 but I'm no sure if they are the same ones all the time. I have to fill their sunflower heart feeder twice a day. I filled it at 7 and it's empty again now. They quarrel amongst themselves so much and while they are doing that the greenfinches nip in and have a quick feed.

Do you know which type are eating the berries?

Plenty of road kill badgers here in the south  ::) .......... several foxes and of course, pheasants at this time of year.

I have a few birds returning to the feeders: 2 blue tits and a great tit in the back garden, a great tit in the front garden ......... plus grey squirrels  >:(

How come mine didn't disappear off too?? They've cost me a fortune! I hae just counted 19 goldfinches, seven greenfinches, three robins hopping around in the bushes, four collared doves, three bluetits on the nuts and two great tits on the feeder plus the usual array of sparrows squabbling and blackbirds scuttling around in the leaves. The starlings have been for their breakfast although this is a fluctuating population at this time of year as some take off for other countries and others arrive. Off on their hols!!

I thought you were more midlands than south CLKD?

The blackbirds love the berries. I have also seen the tits and sparrows at them. Yesterday a lovely mistle thrush was munching away. I have never seen so many rowan berries as there have been this year.

I would love some of your birds Taz. You could put up a sign pointing in my direction.  :D

Ok - will try it!

I find it's the sunflower hearts which mine love but they drop so much and it makes a horrible mess. If I put a saucer on the bottom the doves and pigeons eat it and the little ones don't get a look in.

The magpies are out there at the moment chattering away to each other. Haven't seen the sparrowhawk for a while.

How strange I have just had the binocs trained on what I thought was an owl (was worried as its daytime) & by the time I got them the right way round & focused (meno brain) it was just about to fly but it was a sparowhawk & it took some poor creature off. We have a lovely village magazine through the door where you can put nature inputs like first swallow or unusual sightings. Best was a an escaped bright green amazonian parrot that lived in my garden & the neighbours. It was a late Spring & it survived frosts & snow then one lovely spring evening we had this lovely warm rain shower, it came right up to the house perched on a tree sang a song & I never saw it again  :'( Luckily we took photos.
