Yes, that's exactly how we see them most of the time Taz.  Ours is the European Bee Eater which is more blue coloured.  In fact I hadn't realized how many different types of Bee Eaters there are until I saw that You Tube listing.  They are an uplifting sight and sound.

 ;D ;D

The hornets we get are so big they can lift the cat biscuits in the air and fly off with them so I have to confess that I will the birds to appear when the hornets are around!

Ariadne & Taz2 - spot on, well done!! I cannot believe it, the leaves on the link are exactly the same as my rose leaves!! They are so absolutely neat.

Hyacinth - I need some of your bee eater birds! I am loving the idea of them eating bees now ;D how ironic!! There was I feeling sorry for them, but now...bring on the birds!!

Ok, so does anyone know what I can do?? Will it  eventually kill my rose. I would love to watch the bee, how clever they are. Neat & tidy, brilliant.

Thanks everyone. PN x x

It shouldn't kill it - they are using the leaves for a lining. My mum used to leave rolled up tubes of newspaper in her greenhouse for them to nest in. You may find this interesting as it tells you about the bee itself and the hard work which goes into preparing the cells and laying the eggs http://www.bumblebee.org/OTHERbees2.html#leafcutter

I think they are a bit too large CLKD - they tend to like the tube to be about their own size round if you know what I mean. They might work for a very overweight bee though  ;D ;D

I love the way they finally emerge. The first egg laid obviously is ready to fly first so he bites the bum of the one in front and that one bites the bum of the one in front of him until they get to the last one laid who nibbles his way through the "door" and off they fly.

I think the nest is built - no more damaged leaves as yet! Would it be too late to do the rolled up newspaper thingy? PN

Taz....as always you were right. My hedgehog is going through the garden at the same time every evening. (about 5pm)

Should I just put out a little cat food every day and some water, and will he mind if its in a very quiet corner of the garden away from the dog?

Do your leaves look like this PN http://www.turning-earth.co.uk/leaf_cutter_bee.htm

Taz - I LOVE that site -  I found it by chance one evening last year and I find the tone of it so gentle and undemanding. It took me a good few days to read through the whole site but I loved everything I read. Last time I looked, I thought it hadn't been updated for a while. Purplenanny - you would love it too  :)

I've watched a leaf cutter bee eating its way through some leaves and it was fascinating. It's done in a very orderly, marching fashion, turning smartly to make the curve shape.

We watch bee-eaters when we go to Spain. They nest in sand piles on a building site near where we stay. We love to watch them...well I watch and hubby photographs them  ;)

Our neighbour found an injured hedgehog in our road yesterday afternoon  :'( :'(. They picked it up & placed it in a safe place (off road, under a hedge). & hoped it would recover. Apparently it had signs of blood on it but it was still breathing.
Anyway by this morning it has disappeared & I can't help wondering what happened. Do you think it could have recovered ok & went about its merry way - or could something had carried it off.

Just hoping our hedgehog lady may be able to shed some light on it. ;) ;)

If it was out in daylight and had blood on it then I would think it's chances of survival are very slim. If it has a wound then the flies will quickly descend and lay their eggs. Best thing to do in such situations is to put it in a sturdy, secure box and phone the local vet who should have details of the nearest hedgehog rescue.

Hedgehog Bottom's first aid/diagnosis page is useful http://www.hedgehog-rescue.org.uk/diagnosis.php
