A linnet is smaller than a blackbird and has a pinkish chest. http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/l/linnet/index.aspx

Blackbirds do have colour variations and I am wondering whether the mixture of brown and black is a juvenile male blackbird. They change colour from brown to black - normally starting with the tail - well they do in my garden anyway  :)  You  might find this blackbird link interesting http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/b/blackbird/feathers.aspx

Hope the pigeons make it!

Mine have been eaten by the young magpies this afternoon. It was really funny watching them trying to work out how to get seed out of the teeny slits in the niger feeder. They gave up......eventually!

Have picked broad beans and new potatoes - can you smell the mint?

We had 6 young magpies in the garden yesterday - I think there's a nest in one of our large trees; couldn't see it but the adults are always around and making a lot of noise up there. They were playing around on our garden furniture; one of them had a piece of something (bright orange, not sure that it was edible!) and they were all trying to get it and he seemed to be teasing them with it. Great entertainment.

I must share this as I am so pleased!

3 weeks ago I obtained (through our local freecycle group) a brand new feeder for nigra(sp ?) seeds. Today 2 blue tits have found it and have been on and off throughout the day. I was hoping for finches, but maybe the word will spread now in the birdworld?

Hubby said no birds would come as there is no perch on the feeder, but they cling on with their little feet through the holes and stay on for ages!

About to buy a new bird table now as ours is falling apart! I have found a lovely rustic one, very reasonable compared with garden centres and only £6.95 for delivery

Thanks Taz. Maybe it's a yoof blackbird then. I have seen it on its own.

Now now ladies. Pigeons aren't all bad. The pigeon parents on our tiny balcony are sweet and not even fat!
Mind you, some of the car cr**pers round here are the size of ducks  :D

Oh yes please! would love goldfinches in the garden.

I like the pigeons, they are quite funny, especially when they are chasing around for a bit of 'togetherness' - not much finesse!!

Niger seed = siskins too in my garden. I do love the siskins although they disappear off in the summer. They arrive in November and take their leave in March.

Very smart looking birds but extremely aggressive to the other finches. Tiny but determined!
