Don't understand that comment about supermarkets, CKLD?  :-\ Surely part of the problem is that the oil co. failed to take certain safety precautions because they didn't want to spend the money on "what ifs" when they should have. Accidents do happen but some can be avoided if more time, effort and money is spent on planning - if only!  >:(

humans got drawn into supermarket me me me throw it away culture which includes using up fossil fuels

we rely on 'those in the know' to make sure factories, places of work, oil/gas fields are safe places ..... until an incident happens i.e. torre canyon or this current spill, most of us rarely give how our essentials arrive at our door !

Nature has a way of spitting us up and getting her own back - worse when humans have interfered !

:'(Money talks and morals walk.  I now have a chronic cough and sore throat because the powers that be don't care enough to care enough.  My tiny personal health issue is nothing compared to what is going to happen.  We have been told the air toxicity may cause an evacuation of our homes and I'm four miles from the Mobile Bay.  I was forced to read Dante's Inferno at some point in school and now I know why: the worst circle of Hell was for Avarice (Greed!) and boy are we seeing the results.  Yes, I agree with CLKD on the individual greed of all of us (mostly) who want what we want, but I have stood up to some mighty big powers to object to things wrong and we'd all better start doing it rather than accepting the downside of human nature.  And I hope I've been clear: I blame our gov't caretakers equally with BP - absolutely equally - and to a lesser extent I blame us for our demanding the latest in toys and such.

And guess who I care about the most?  The animals that were entrusted to our superior (?) intellect's care.

I've cleared out the pond this afternoon ........ found lots of froglets.  Have ordered new plants so will be able to encourage more insects .............. hopefully the fish spawn will have survived my ministrations and some will hatch .......... robin was close by cheeping gently for meal worms ........

Hi CLKD - why have you cleared out your pond now? I don't understand why you would clear out so many living things?

I lifted plants that are over-grown, chopped and snipped leaves/roots and replaced the whole basket in the corner where it came out from.  I can now see the critters which are in the caves at the back - which were a fire-surround many years ago which the builder thought looked good made of stone  ::) - so don't worry.  Lots of froglets all over the damp areas around the pond, I can see the fish again ............

It just seems a daft time to clear out a pond. you didn't actually say you had only trimmed some plants back. To me "clearing out a pond" is much more drastic and you are clearing just as the dragonflies are emerging.

We have damsels all over the water but I've left that area.  I was bombed by a large dragon on Friday night, it sat on a post and buzzed as I walked by but haven't seen it on the water.  I rarely get down to mud level unless we have a total clean out in March which is every 4-5 years.  I had to cut back in order to see our fish  ::) - don't worry Taz2, no damage done.  We were out there until 10.00 p.m. watching the frogs leave their 'caves' for a swim before they climbed out into the garden to feed.  I don't think there are many suitable plants for dragons to climb up ........

I had the robin in the dining room at breakfast time waiting for live meal worms ..... now the packet has been delivered he's disappeared  ::) the sparrows however are tucking in  :-*

A thrush is singing through the rain outside the bathroom window.  He's been singing for 3 weeks almost constantly.  Two male blackbirds look really scruffy.  Robin attends at breakfast time for meal worms between broods!

My three baby bluebirds left without a word. No note, no phone call, no nothing, just GONE.  I miss their darling little faces, but knew the way they were hanging out of the bird box it would be soon.  I had really hoped to see their first attempts at flying.  I miss the constant activity.  The last bunch were hatched next door and came to feed at our feeders so I hope for that.  Darn.

That's the way with birds; no loyalty  ::) however, the sparrows have brought their young to our patio to teach them about meal worms ...... in the rain this morning, there was thunder yesterday afternoon and now it's blowing hard from the South  ::)

I can't believe it - a bluebird flew to the nest box last evening and looked in and left - probably saying, Why haven't they cleaned out the nest (the mother cleans most of everything but the nest out in the few days before they leave the premises).  And this morning two bluebirds came by and again flew right to the opening and looked in.  It is possible another pair is going to nest here or maybe they are just checking my housekeeping.  Anyway, I don't feel so abandoned now.  We had cleaned it out as they won't come to a box that is not completely clean.

Honestly, what we do for these lovely friends.

We have two baby cardinals - not so gorgeous when young, but so funny and clumsy.

The wind has blown a gale since mid-yesterday morning, intermittent heavy rain, gusty ......... bit like meno really  ::) - robin was on time for his breakfast this morning, he made Hubby jump by sitting at eye level in the cherry tree when Hubby was picking fruit, then flew behind him to the door!  Once fed he flew away - robin not Hubby ...........
