Thanks.  It's the fact that I could have avoided this happening  :bang: :bang: :bang: as for the plastic ball idea, it's tosh.  I tried this years ago and the ball froze fast into the water  >:( ..... making it impossible to move it at all.  I usually break the ice with one sharp thwack and then remove as much as possible ....... was so busy with the wild birds that I forgot the frogs  :'(

Thanks Tazz and Trey.  Do you get moulds [we use a 'u'] indoors?  We lived ina very old property where mould thrived on the bathroom walls, whatever we used to wipe it off, it came back for more  ::)

My partner's pond had ice free areas round the edge, but they still found dead frogs, CLKD. Maybe it was just the harsh weather.

Hi CLKD, we once built a beautiful home in Alabama (that we had to sell as we spent too much building it) and the contractor insulated between the two floors without leaving an air space.  It was not long before I noticed black coming out around the edges of the ceiling vents for the heat/air.  Horrible experience.

We have it on our north facing brick - I spray with Clorox to remove it, but I have two air cleaners and a de-humidifier in the house and so far, so good.  Nothing in the shpwers - well, maybe a rare spot.

The south has so many beautiful birds, plants and waterways that we'll put up with mold (no u) to enjoy the beauty.  In Colorado Rockies, we lived at 7600 ft. elevation and one season had 41 species of birds and our biggest problem was the black bears tearing down the feeders and the suet hangers.  In California, where we lived our working years, there were so many homes and buildings and so few trees that the wildlife was a party at a bar - yuk.

However, did decide our block (neighborhood) badly needs the equivalent of a pub.  Not much chatting around-lots of retireds.  So we are going to build a front courtyard and put benches to see if that perks things up.

CLKD: our Colorado Rocky Mountains bears climb trees, but all the had to do was stretch out and reach up to pull the bird feeders down.  We had a drought the years we were there and they were desperate for food and came into the populated areas to rob garbage bins and outdoor food.

Hi, Residual Heat, thanks for the invite - will try and find it now.  I love the exchanges of different experiences and ways of saying things.  I much prefer 'loo' to 'John' or 'toilet' for instance.

Birds are singing through the sleet.  Pied wagtail and a pair of robins are here for meal worms ........ no snowdrops yet ........ daffs are poking through ..........

Hi Residualheat, I've got one for you.  My mother, born in Manchester, used to say "Don't act like a gutter-snipe".  Have you heard of that term?

It's getting time for the bluebirds to begin their nest and we are so hoping they will use our new 'home' for their babies.  I put out a fruit and nut mix and they love it.  We are due for some tropical warmth this week (73F) so the birds will enjoy the respite from the bitter cold of last week.

We have a glut of (pardon me for saying this but I mean no offence) "Tits" in our garden, all species, as well as Thrush's, a couple of Wrens, Chaffinch's, Green Finches and Green Woodpeckers who peck at the ground to get the worms and bugs to come to the top (I think that's why they do it).  The Woodpeckers are amazing to watch and are only 2 metres from our window.  It's great.

I look forward to the next instalment of Nature Watch !!

Yes, I know that term! I believe it means a 'lowly person' and the online dictionary says that it was 'originally a name applied to the common snipe (the bird), then to a person who gathered refuse from gutters in city streets'. Kind of fits with this thread, then, originally being about birds  ;)

I think the birds here know something, because the pidgeons are being very friendly. They must think it's getting near to nesting time.

As soon as I opened our lounge curtains - 10 mins ago - 2 robins were there, one on the windowsill, for their meal worms  :-*

Fed up with feeding all the pigeons and starlings in the neighbourhood.  I've been trying to encourage birds like robins, blackbirds (my favourite) and the smaller birds but as soon as I put anything out, which is twice a day, the hoovers come down and everything is gone in 60 seconds.  I've been putting out porridge oats or muesli in lard with nuts and sultanas and dried mealworms.  And the bloomin' magpies – thieves.  They take the food and hide it.  Thinking about not bothering any more.  :(
