Use of Ovestin
« on: May 09, 2020, 06:25:08 PM »

Has anyone had success with Ovestin cream?  My GP has just prescribed Ovestin for my external burning to use alongside my vagisan. I have only used it twice and sparingly. I sat yesterday for an hour celebrating my mum's 93rd birthday party with my sister. Well, the burning after was not good. It has been horrendous today. Quite disappoiinted as I have had several better days. Apparently, there is a Doctor on Instagram tomorrow afternoon 2.00pm talking about Atrophy so will listen to it. Replies appreciated.

Ditch the 'vagisan' if that is what you have been using.

Read the vaginal atrophy threads on here.  Lack of oestrogen may cause dryness: inside and out of the whole body including vagina.

The idea is to use the 'ovestin' for 2 weeks every night, inserting into the vagina to soften the area and replace lost oestrogen.  Unless your GP has told you otherwise, what does it say on the packet?

Who is the Doctor on Instragram?

Thanks for your response. Sorry my post should have said vagifem not vagisan.  I haven't used vagisan for a long time, only use Vagifem and Yes products which I find very soothing. As my problem is more confined to the outer area that is where I have been prescribed  the Ovestin cream for. Not sure who the Doctor is, on Instagram, but Jane Lewis who wrote the book Me and my Menopausal Vagina mentioned it on her facebook page/ group.Vaginal Atrophy. Thought it might be interesting. Can't fault this group, you are all so kind and knowledgeable. I have mentioned this site to several Doctors and they all agreed it is brilliant.

How often are you using the Vagifem? I found Ovestin a bit stingy when i first started using it on the outer bits but that soon went.

tnx.  Interesting to see that despite the lockdown, VA is being talked about.

How often do you use the 'vagifem', some require it nightly.  Hopefully the 'ovestin' will help ease any soreness it is something I have started doing this week, having used it internally for years now I smear a little on the lips etc. then lay quietly.  Dozing  ::)

Let us know how you get on!

I use the Vagifem 3 times a week now, may have to do five times a week. Did do a three week reload on Doctors approval. Big mistake on my part was stopping the Vagifem when I thought I was better. Shan't do that again. Someone on this site said if you stop the Vagifem, symptoms can be far worse and the the Atrophy takes longer to ease. That makes sense to me now.The Ovestin does sting a little when applied at night, but like you I close my eyes and hopefully doze off.  Look forward to hearing the Doctor tomorrow. Thanks for your advice and kind words.

I have to use Vagifem every day, once you get it under control do keep the regime up, as you have unfortunately found you can't stop the treatment. Hope you feel more comfortable soon.

Thanks Tinkerbell, they are very reassuring words. I will definately keep the treatment going. Hope the vagifem filters through to the outer tissues / area very soon.. it certainly is a long process. Thanks again.

Understand your pain Midnight Shadow.
I'm currently on Vagifem every second night and Ovestin externally on the other nights. And I'm slowly improving. Like you my pain is external and I use yes externally two times a day as well

I was on Vagifem every third night but I could feel my self going backwards.

Thanks Lyncola, it's awful what we ladies have to suffer. Do you use much of the Ovestin on the outer area? I am not really sure how much to use.  I don't want it to burn. I only have two small tubes. The yes, is very soothing and I am using it several times a day. Hoping gor a better day. Any improvement is better than none. Have had seversl better days. Just yesterday was awful.

It won't burn, I find it soothing the same as internally.

I got told to use a size of a pea for Ovestin cream, for external use.
And atrophy is terrible I get better cut back a bit and slowly get worse so have to increase.
I haven't bothered seeing my doctor about how much I'm using (she said three times a week then back to two). I will talk to her when I need a new script.

I have a yearly review my GP isn't interested in how much I use, simply that it works.
