Anxiety snowballed
« on: May 13, 2020, 11:07:18 AM »

Hi, I've been in pre/full menopause for 8 years (started in 30's).  I have suffered anxiety on/off for last 4/5 years...last few days has been awful especially at nights..3 calls with docs in 24 hrs...feel I'd settle if only I could just see a dr for reassurance...phone calls just not helping... my anxiety attacks don't normally last This long...I'm terrified it's not (anxiety...but likely it is)..terrified in case need to go to hosp if it's not anxiety of getting covid.  My mind is overthinking everything... been given beta blockers and sleeping tablets...I'm even anxious about taking the pills.  Is anyone anxiety levels shot to pieces in lockdown.   :'(

Hi footymum, the reason I joined this forum was because this is how I felt, that was nearly two years ago now and I have to say,it really helped me,knowing I wasn't alone,I've never suffered anxiety etc before,so wasn't sure what was wrong with me but health anxiety played a big part, depression set in,it was just awful but slowly I came through the mist and fog,I still have my days but the help you receive on here is fab.
Panic attacks make you feel you?re about to die,I'd wake in the middle of the night thinking omg omg, this is it,it's scary
Are you on any meds for it?You should really speak to your dr,surgeries are strict, the chances of you catching covid are minimal xx

You mayB need to start with a betablocka - what has been prescribed and when to take?  Begin with that B4 the other med as you won't know which is working.  There is a lot of stress around and I had a wobbly over the weekend, because I am unlikely to see a GP/Nurse  ::)

I took Propranolol for years to ease early morning anxiety surges and it certainly helped.  I stopped the week B4 lockdown as I was getting background headaches and have been OK thus far.

I also have rescue remedy mouth spray which works 4 me.  As well as an emergency anti-anxiety tablet.  ..... and breath.  Yoga can be useful too .

I have spoke with my GP yday and again tday on the phone....I'd have preferred to be seen...but we are where we are.  I have propranolol I took 1st time last night around 7pm....my anxiety has been bad last 2 nights... I don't get breathing difficulties...just an overwhelming warm feeling head/toe the heart flutters....upper back/chest pain...running to loo and legs shaking...this lasted 6 hrs on Monday night on/off.  Propranolol helped last night gave me warm fuzzy feelings on/off but did help me calm down.  I've been given sleeping pills too...not taken them yet.  Have no appetite tday...just nibbling and really down tday.  I appreciate the replies.  I've tried headspace for meditation but not working...I'm normally so active...I do have ongoing sleep probs (few years).  it's just nice not knowing I'm not alone. Friends don't understand it... only 1/2 do...husband is great and he tries so hard.

it's horrible, thing is,we?re never prepared for this happening to us. I lost so much weight when the anxiety was bad, like you,no appetite, cooking dinner then hardly touching it,I really hope this passes for you,I'm glad to say it did eventually for me, I think my body just got fed up being on high alert all the time.
I don't suppose you fancy taking up running? I know it's not for everyone but that REALLY did help me and still does.Anyway take care

Thx I'm actually a football coach...normally out coaching girls at night.  I've been doing lots of walking since lockdown.  Need to try force myself outdoors tday...even if just a short walk to try get an appetite.  Hung a washing out and on sofa all day.  If I can get 1 good night it will hopefully give me confidence that I'm past worst for now...someone has given me number for Breathing Space.

So this may be a drop in adrenaline causing anxiety if you are normally active.  I took the propranolol every night and not as required because quite frankly, it is less likely to work.

Standing in the sun to breath helps me.  Listening to 1 noise, difficult with sparrows squawking  ::).

Yes- anxiety!! And snowballed- yes!!
I nearly had to leave a (long) queue outside the supermarket a week or so ago as it just swept over me. When my meno symptoms were at their highest, I actually left trolleys (full) in supermarkets as I had to get out, left the hairdressers with my colour on because they were busy and I was desperate to get it off my head, and my most dramatic- cancelling a flight for family holiday the morning of the day I was due to fly!
Anyone here who has suffered or is living with anxiety or panic attacks will relate entirely to your middle of the night panics. Thankfully, I am further along now with meno and I recognise the feelings when the approach and can say to myself- I know what this feeling is, it will pass and I will be ok!
Hence, stayed in that queue and rode it out. And I was ok.
I think often about those with high levels of pre existing anxiety, OCD, health anxiety etc (I have experience of all of these) with everything that is happening right now. Many without pre existing conditions will have background or foreground anxiety and stress now.
Try not to set yourself up with the if I could just have one good night so I know etc. Trust your body. And your amazing mind. Both will protect you and kick in at some point. Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, but it WILL. It WILL pass.
As Jaypo  said, it made so much sense to me- Your body does get fed up with being in a state of alert all the time and your system will take over your fight/ flight mechanism.
I might have missed this, but are you on HRT?
Also, ditto to CKLD- think I mixed letters up there - beta blockers work. I often used to have one if jittery on morning waking. It was enough. They can, for some, affect sleep though but not everyone.
And if you need to sleep at some point, have a tablet. Again, you will be fine and it might just give yourself a little break from the waiting to sleep, overthinking what you are feeling, worrying about it then spiralling into the panic etc. However, I am not an advocate of either medication in all honesty, even though I have had both at times. I would be more keen to pursue the possibility of HRT as I think this is what could be triggering/ exacerbating the deep anxiety. It made a huge difference to mine. Brought it in line.
Hope you are ok right now? There is so much support on here (I’ve relied on it many times)  and you are not alone with this xx

My worst meno symptoms were anxiety and insomnia. I hadn't had either before peri and both have been cured by hrt. If you think you anxiety is meno related I would advise you consider hrt, it changed my life.

I am better if alone, i.e. if I had booked a solo holiday I wouldn't worry as much but letting DH down  :-\ adds pressure.

Nope - but glad I helped at the time  ;)

I have to say that lock down has lowered my anxiety - because I haven't had to go anywhere not even [espeically] to see Mum ....... I can even plan to buy a property in Lake Lugano 'cos I don't have a Passport nor can we travel  ;D.  If someone handed me a key though it would rise my anxiety immediately.
