Starting HRT again
« on: April 27, 2020, 09:38:37 PM »

I've been on oestrogen only patch for a few years had some ups and downs and stopped for a break a few times only to go back because of awful flushes, anyway I went to my gp about six weeks ago and she said that as I'm now 60 I should cut my 50mcg patch in half and wean myself off you will be fine she said ! Well I was u ntill now the muscle aches are terrible I have no energy and feel just wretched does this mean that my oestrogen is gone so low is this why im aching so much ? When I stopped before the flushes came back but the muscle pain was nothing like it is now ?

Gone  :-\

Hi anjia - where did you go to?

If you are reading this - your doc is wrong about weaning off hRT. I am mid 60s and still on it. The guidelines have changed. Provided there are no health reasons for you to stop it you can take it for ever. I think you have had a hysterectomy and do not need progesterone, if I remember? All the better!

Please, no need to cut the patches in half, 50 mcg is not a high dose and if that controls your symptoms then that's what you need. Go back to a full patch and see how you feel and go to your GP to say this is what you want to do as the guidelines are out of date. If you want the info about current guidelines, rejoin the forum and ask and I will find them. Otherwise like at the website of the British Menopause Society and look for their consensus statements. You will find them all here:
https://thebms.org.uk/publications/consensus-statements/

Hope this helps and you feel better soon!

Hurdity x

PS Your post got missed because as you can imagine everyone is on lockdown and has other things on their mind and family responsibilities etc so not posting so often. Also not so many come to this section but mostly all things menopause.

Anjia, I'm on different HRT to you (but it's basically the same hormone in a tablet I'm sure) but I would say unless your GP is a lady of your age, been through the same menopause history etc, she can't tell you what will suit you best as she's not YOU. We all know our own bodies best and how they work and react. As Hurdity says, the Guidelines have all changed and your GP should listen to what you're saying+what you want to do.

You don't need extra stress especially right now, I hope you can feel better and brighter very soon, keep us updated!
