Mask Making
« on: April 09, 2020, 08:41:23 AM »

Hi all

I know that there is some controversy about wearing masks but I for one feel psychologically much safer in the supermarket and pharmacy wearing something.

I didn't want to try and source proper masks and take them away from key workers so I've been trying to make my own and want to share a quick and simple method.

I have a few silky square neckerchiefs - a hanky, napkin, or square of material would also work.

- Fold scalf in half on the diagonal so it's a triangle
- Thread a hair bobble or elastic band on each outer point
- Tie both outer points of the scalf together
- Tuck the upper points under the knot
- Fold a piece of kitchen roll and place in the middle
- hold mask up to your face tucking the hair bobbles or elastic bands over your ears
- adjust the mask so internal kitchen roll covers the nose and mouth, the top of the scalf comes over the nose and the bottom of the scalf comes under your chin

With a bit of practice you can make this in a couple of minutes.

Super easy to dismantle and throw in the washing machine when you get home, throw the kitchen roll in the bin.

We will all look like Dick Turpin but hopefully a tiny bit safer, if only in our own heads.

If nothing else it's a way to while away a bit of time trying to make them!

Stay safe x

? 'Photos ? ..........

Sounds good.  The important issue about masks is it stops those who have been infected spreading the Virus.

It would be better not to wear gloves, as people get a false sense of security.  Washing hands is more usual anyway whereas gloves 'don't need' to be washed I was told earlier today  :-\ - as you can imagine, the Lecture was given  ;D

If you don't wear gloves you contaminate your keys, steering wheel, door handle etc. I wear gloves and remove one so I can get my card out and unlock the car. I use a glove for anything contaminated and bare hand for anything clean. Anything non perishable stays in the car for 3 days, everything else goes under the hosepipe. Not sure this is the best option though, bread was a bit soggy  >:( Gloves stay untouched for 3 days.

You are in a messy environment to begin with.  I have been hanging gardening or Marigold gloves on the line in hot sunshine.  I keep those gloves and bucket separate from everything except it's dedicated use, that is cleaning Council bins after they have been emptied.

Bread would be soggy under the hosepipe though  ;).  I have cleaned steering wheel, door handles, keys etc. - there's 2 of us here and no one else - but not the hand rail up/down the stairs  ::)

As for masks, if one has a beard [not that should apply to use] it is better to shave it off for a close enough fit ;-)

Hi Bobidy - thanks for starting this thread. I was going to post some info about masks in the general science CV-19 thread but it will probably get lost. I hope you don't mind if I also add info about the evidence relating to face masks and their use in Covid-19 situation?

Anyway lots of linkls to follow. If it's too much for your threads I'll delete the evidence stuff and add to my other thread!
