Food deliveries across the UK
« on: April 04, 2020, 04:11:12 PM »

Are allowed!  Our Pubs are serving ordered meals to be collected or delivered in the village: cooked on the premises by qualified staff and Facebook is full of praise.  No one has been infected by anything despite the initial worries.  Our village shop remains open with 3 allowed inside at one time.  Everyone quite happy.  However, so far it hasn't rained  ::)

The Government allows us to drive no further than 5 miles.  That would get me to the nearest supermarkets but not back  ;D when taken literally  ::)

Do look on local Facebook groups and the Trussell Trust as well as local Churches.  EVERY area has food deliveries to access now: via pubs., food outlets, food veg. box systems; food banks will advise as should the Church/Chapel, our local shop has had donations both from locals and a country-wide charity which are topping up what the vulnerable here might need in future weeks - the Charity has had a huge input which they are rolling out across the UK.

Ask your GP/Pharmacist/Church if you don't look at Facebook etc.. No one need not have access to food.  Our shops are delivering and the Supermarkets too.  If you see a small supermarket van delivering locally, wave it down with your details in a sealed plastic see-through envelope/bag and hand to the driver?  Or ask the postie as he/she passes by, ours are speaking from a respectable distance.

No one need go without.  No one's needs are less important than anyone else's might be.

Of course they're allowed! Was there any suggestion they wouldn't be?

Our village pub does takeaway food but can also provide basic supplies as well as veg boxes etc.  They have just started doing their own ready meals too. The takeaway food, as well as supplies service, is a real boon for where we live and especially as there are so many older people in and around the village, many of whom have various health conditions. I would say they are providing a very essential service. it really does save the amount of time you have to drive out and put youself at risk. OK you spend a bit more but who is spending money anyway? No fuel, no going out no nothing! No point in buying clothes. No meals out, no concerts, theatre or holidays.....

Our village FB group has a list of places that will do deliveries. However a lot of food delivery places round here are already oversubscribed. I didn't get in quickly enough but braved the regular supermarket today for the first time since before lockdown. Thought it would be quiet on a sunny Sat afternoon. No queue to get in but a small queue to pay. Not too bad except I forgot some things and couldn't go back round the one way system with the other trolleys bearing down!

Most areas will have some sort of self-help group either on FB, or in a city for example - our nearest big one ( 25 miles away) has an aid group for vulnerable people so even those who can't get food delivered through a regular service can call on the myriad of volunteers all eager to help.

Also someone put a piece of paper through the door and there is someone who will do shopping if you are self-isolating or vulnerable.

It's impossible to get a slot on a supermarket. Well I only tried Waitrose thinking they would be easier and they are only delivering to vulnerable people (quite right too).

What on earth is that about driving 5 miles? Where on earth did that come from? Can't be true as blanket thing because many people live more than 5 miles from nearest shop, like me. Also have to drive more than that to visit a vulnerable relative.

Visiting a vulnerable relative?  That probably won't be seen as essential.

Also: reading the national press many people who should be eligible for emergency delivery slots aren't getting them due to Data Protection Rules - supermarkets are unable to access their details in order to help any who may require food deliveries.

There have been suggestions across the County that all Pubs etc. should close .......... to stop people congregating. It has been muted in several threads here too.

How about those that don't have a computer though, many of these groups are aimed at the technologically savvy .......... and not to the deaf or blind or simply don't want a computer.
