I suspected that with the family by the bedside that the News at 4.30 would not be good
What a Hero. What a sad end ............

Isolating due to diagnosis, doesn't mean to say that they are particularly ill.

The South African varient is guaranteed to take hold here. We're an island yet seem to have the most porous borders of any country. There are still 20000 people arriving every day. Look at the Isle of Man and New Zealand, they have a normal life. I find it infuriating that we can't do the same.

Isle of Man have been in lockdown until yesterday. They have had deaths too. Being an Island doesn't seem to make much difference now.
I can understand trying to isolate incomers in Hotels is virtually impossible: 21,000 people arrive by plane daily
. One from Nigeria via Dubai and Doha - walked straight into the airport, out and into a Taxi.

IOM was in lockdown because one new arrival failed to isolate. Wasn't he the one they jailed? When we are in lockdown and people are dying why on earth are we letting 21,000 potentially infected people in every day?? They've had a year to get their act together yet we are still letting them in. Any fool can work out what's going to happen.

Yep. Surely it would be better to have isolated incomers initially rather than let the Virus run riot? But 'they' are safe behind their doors in Downing Street, well enough to go to Scotland and back !?!?!

Hello ladies.
It amazes me that COVID has been tamed in some countries but seems to be running rampant in ours. The exact same pathogen yet, as sheila99 says people in New Zealand are living a normal life! The difference is the way our country is being governed surely.
Let's hope that the vaccines offer us some protection against the new variants until more tailored ones can be developed. I see that the Johnson and Johnson one is proven to be effective against the SA virus because it was in circulation during the trials. Until then we all need to behave sensibly to stay safe.
Incidentally a friend of ours died last week from COVID. He had been due to retire next month and his first grandchild is expected soon. So sad.
Take care ladies.

My area has just been confirmed to having the new South African strain.
It was in the local paper last night.
The testing centre up the road from us was chocka this morning. They’re also setting up another one locally too.

If you’ve had the original COVID are you immune to the South African variant I wonder.

Large country, small population. MayB they were also readily prepared, unlike the UK governments who knew this was on it's way!
