Endometrial thickness
« on: March 05, 2020, 04:44:48 PM »

Hi. I've just had an ultrasound scan. My endometrial thickness is 9mm and I'm very worried about it. I was having normal periods until recently when I missed one period, then had a normal one, then 8 days later had 2 weeks of continuous bleeding. That stopped 10 days ago. Is 9mm an indication of cancer? Thank you for any input, I'm really worried about this.

Hi Anotherorchid

If you are still having periods and have only just missed one then your womb lining will be thickening and being shed as part of the normal menstrual cycle.  From what I've read that measurement is within normal limits for menstruating women and I am sure you should be told that? To see if it has overthickened, then the scan should be done immediately the heaviest part of your bleed has finished otherwise it will be difficult to interpret unless you also have a transvaginal scan and results indicate the need for a hysteroscopy and possibly biopsy - to see if you have fibroids or a polpy for example.

If you had the scan 10 days after you bleed stopped then it will be expected to have grown.

However if they are looking for anything abnormal then I presume the scan will have shown if further investigations are needed?

Heavy bleeding is very much expect at the beginning of peri-menopause but you are right to  get it checked out. This would very rarely be an indication of cancer and hopefully your doc will be able to reassure you on that very soon?

In the meantime there is an article about peri-menopause you might like to read here:
https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/magazine/pdf/Article%20-%20Perils%20of%20the%20Perimenopause.pdf

Please try not to worry! Can you call the doc to dsicuss this or are you waiting for a follow up appointment? Sometimes reports of investigations are put online if your practice has this facility. I read the report of my last endometrial scan in this way.

Thanks Hurdity for your reply. When you say about having a transvaginal scan, I did have that today and that's what showed the endometrial thickness of 9mm - is this different from when you have the abdominal ultrasound?
My bleeding for 15 days was very light, and seemed odd as it started 8 days after my previous period stopped. The results are being sent to my GP but I don't know when I can get an appointment with them. I'm so very very worried about this. I can't eat, concentrate on anything, I can't stop crying. I know so many others have problems but I just seemed fixated on this. My GP says I'm perimenopausal because of a high FSH result, but another FSH test done a few weeks ago was much lower, in the premenopausal range. Thank again for any help.
