Itching
« on: February 29, 2020, 02:56:33 PM »

Hello, I'm new to this forum and could do with some advise. I am going through my menopause now as I had breast cancer last year and finished my treatment in December. I am now taking hormone therapy hence menopause. The issue I have that is really bothering me is intense itching mainly hands and feet it's driving me insane. I'm using Dr organic aloe vera gel that helps. Does anyone have any tips please as I've read this can happen in the menopause. Thank you x

Sorry that you went through treatment.  What type of hormone therapy have you been prescribed?

As oestrogen levels drop off the body may become dry: inside and out.  Scalps, legs, skin, vagina  :o [read our threads on this one! make
notes :-)) ], deep in the ears, nostrils, eyes .......... 4 me it was insteps.  The moment I took socks off to step into my evening bath the feet would itch. I would wake in the night with one heel scratching the other .

Well done on getting a supportive Oncologist?

Many ladies find that a good quality moisturiser helpful, I use 'vaseline' hand cream or 'Nivea' on legs etc..  VA is a different treatment al2gether  ::)

Trying to get up to date here ..........  in June 1995 I had 'tamoxifen' prescribed and it made me very ill  :-\

Is Zoladex a chemotherapy?

A study by doctors at Nottingham City Hospital found that Zoladex, a hormone treatment, is as effective as chemotherapy at preventing the return of cancer. The treatment has the added advantage that, unlike chemotherapy which can cause infertility and hair loss, it has few side effects.12 Oct 2003

Anastrozole is in a class of medications called nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of estrogen the body makes. This can slow or stop the growth of many types of breast cancer cells that need estrogen to grow.

Itching is usually due to a lack of oestrogen.  Are U worried that it might be a side effect of the above?

I've had chemo and radio therapy, zolodex suppresses ovaries in pre menopausal women. it's not chemotherapy, I will be having injections for two years and the anastrazole for five which stops estrogen . I couldn't take tamoxifen. It probably is a side effect the itching but could of happened through normal menopause I assume x

I feel a bit up and down emotionally, few hot flushes in the evening. Still get tired. stiff joints on getting up but gets better when moving. I was thinking about taking omega 3 fish oil supplements. it's been a tough year but got through it. Back to work Tuesday after a year off 😬

I use Dermol 500 as a wash, it has helped my skin immensley. I couldn't say the intense itching has all been helped by the Dermol as I also take HRT so it is probably a combination. I had intense itching for a number of years few GP appointments given various creams never worked & they didn't know what was causing it. I'm sure it is meno related, occasionally get the odd itch but nothing like it was (wakening me at night scratching etc). x
