Experiences of commencing oestrogen gel and utrogestan
« on: January 12, 2020, 09:56:29 AM »

As I have, today, just started using oestrogel and will take 100mg utrogestan tonight, I would be very interested in hearing other womens experiences of starting this regime so I know what to expect.
So far I think I feel slightly dizzy but could be imagining it.

Hi the regime suits me very well  but it does take a while to start working . The advice is to give it 3 months. I found keeping a diary of my symptoms helped me. I thought I wasn't improving till I looked back at the diary .

Good luck xx

Hi Dotty

Good idea about keeping a symptom diary.  I definitely feel different today even though first day! Feeling slightly dizzy and nauseous and am hoping this doesn't get worse.

Thanks x

I had an upset stomach sometimes in the first few weeks of using both of these (I inserted the utrogestan). I also had "period" pains, which lasted for a few weeks. I took them for about 10 weeks, but stopped as I had no improvement in brain fog, fatigue and depression, which is what I was taking it for. I have moderate ME/CFS which has worsened since the menopause,  and I hoped that HRT would give me a bit of a boost. Maybe I should have tried it for longer, but I put on about 10 pounds in the time I took it and really didn't want to put on any more weight as I was already overweight.

Sorry that I can't be more encouraging, many ladies find it beneficial.  I think my health is beyond being helped by anything. I hope you find it helpful.

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time with Cfs and ME. Brain fog, fatigue and depression are all awful. I hope you find something that helps.xx

Thanks for your understanding, Mintea. ME is a horrible, extremely debilitating illness that I wouldn't wish on anyone. I had a very full life before I got it - working full time, going out a lot in the evenings, and I was physically active, loving riding, walking and cycling, and I also did conservation work most weekends. I've had it for 24 years and still struggle to accept how very different my life is now.

Some people with ME can't socialise and lose their friends, some are disbelieved by their families and doctors. To suffer from such a horrible illness and not be believed must be utterly soul destroying, I don't know how these poor souls cope. 😢

After 6 kinds of hrt ,gel utrogestan, and testosterone twice a week is the one that worked for me.  It did take a while to settle though and I got a few more symptoms to start with that I hadn't had before but after 4 months they had all settled and after 7 months I started to feel so much better! It think it took a long time to settle though because I had been bad for a long time and I had had to change my hrt all those times over 3 years or so.  Now everything is much better.
I do hope that it settle quicker for you x

hi
i've been in the gel and have had hair shedding my hair is noticibly thinner and i contacted the manufacturer of it and they gave e this response for anyone interested.

Alopecia (hair loss) can be a side effect of use and is listed on the FDA approved product label, it has been identified during post-approval use of EstroGel 0.06%® (estradiol) from a population of uncertain size; therefore, it is not always possible to reliably estimate its frequency. Please refer to your physician to further discuss this symptom.

so i know this could mean only a few people have reported but i think it's clear to say that estrogel can cause hair loss as i think so can most estrogens

Thankyou everyone who has replied to my.post. Having read a lot of threads about this I decided to insert the progesterone vaginally and have been doing that for the first few days using an ovestin applicator. However I've now decided to take them orally so I can see if it affects me differently. Also so I can comply with the doctors advice for a while at least.

Hi Mintea

I use patches where you use gel, but wanted to ask if the dizziness and nausea has subsided? Mine went after a few days. I take the Utro orally and it really helps me sleep. 20 mins after taking it I am out for the count, which is great for me as iWork long hours in a busy job.
I increased the estrogen after 3 months and again felt dizzy and nauseous, but only for a few days and it has not returned. I have been on the increased dose for about 7 months now.

Good luck Mintea

Hi all

How long did people on average start to feel better? I've been using the combo for 3 months and still feeling rubbish, and the v dryness has not improved.  The min benefit so far is that the hot flushes and night sweats have gone.

The consultant reduced me to one pump of gel as I was getting so emotional all of the time, but I'm really bloated in my tummy and legs, and as I am overweight so this is really not helping, and the brain fog is awful.  I've asked about inserting it vaginally but told to continue to take orally.  Really wonder now if there is any alternative as patches  seem to be in short supply? Christmas was really difficult as I was very down and my husband (poor thing) - has suggested I come off it as I think he is finding me really hard to live with.

Grateful of any advice.

I started on the gel a month ago. Haven't taken the tabs yet as I had a normal period of my own. Due to start tabs tomorrow ( rather dreading that part). I think the gel has helped me to be more clear headed and maybe less anxious so far.
The night sweats stopped very quickly but have returned again as bad as before. I don't know whether to up the dose - currently 1.5 pumps and see whether that improves or wait it out?
Any here have any advice on this? My Gp is useless :-\

Hi there

I felt better within a week or so of starting HRT, but then the feeling better would reduce so after 3 months I increased the dose, which helped.  Have been on HRT since last March. I had more energy and the hot flushes went within a few weeks, but I have yet to find my libido. Feeling less vaginal dryness, so still hoping that might return some day.

I may need to increase the dose again, as palpitations are coming back and I only sleep properly during the Progesterone days.

I'm due to start the progesterone tomorrow. I am horribly sensitive even to my own so am somewhat dreading it BUT if it helps me sleep that will be a huge bonus!
