Please can somebody out there advise me. I'm 65years old have been on HRT for 23 years. My GP is unhappy about prescribing utrogestan or any progesterone as apparently an ‘alert' comes up on the computer, due to my age. I still have a womb so obviously need some form of progesterone. Does anybody know what is acceptable for somebody my age.

Your Dr might give you Livial [ Tibolone] mine did at age 72

Not too sure what tibolone is. Is it a progesterone?

Might be worth checking he's trying to prescribe the right sort of utro, the 200mg prescribed to support IVF might come up with an alert. Can't help on the age thing as I'm not over 65 yet. If you don't get anywhere you could ask for a referral to a meno clinic (I have the same problem with testosterone and this is way round it).

Jaydee, Tibolone has synthetic but weak, Estogen, progesterone, and kind of testosterone,you could search it on google

I am prescribed utrogestan 200. Would the utrogestan 100 be strong enough?   I insert them vaginally.

The 200mg ones are only licensed for IVF. I have them too because the doc I saw couldn't find the 100mg, that's because they come under Micronised Progesterone not utrogeston. If you still use a cycle you need 200mg for 12 days per cycle but you can use 2x100mg. If you use it continuously you should be on 100mg daily.

Thankyou Sheila, I feel clearer in my mind now. My previous gp, who was quite knowledgeable on hrt has retired and the new one........45 year old woman, is absolutely clueless!

Many are!   Maybe contact Dr Louise Newson's Clinic for advice that you could take to your GP?  Or ask the GP to contact Dr Newson directly?

If your GP refuses to play ball, I agree with CLKD, contact Dr Newson because she will prescribe it as long as you don't have any underlying health issues.   She will also write to your doctor with her recommendations.   

Alternatively, why not ring round and find a local private doctor who is prepared to prescribe it?

I'm confused are you saying your GP will prescribe Estrogen but not progesterone now your 65 if so that's ridiculous and dangerous.

jaydee - your doc can override anything on the computer I'm sure!  I've no idea what the alert is but sounds like something introduced possibly by the local Trust? I'm 66 and on HRT including progesterone. Everything I get is non-standard and not on the formulary list for my area!

You do not need to consult a private doctor for this!!! Just someone that knows what they're talking about.

Find someone who knows though Hurdity - it is obvious from what is reported here that GPs still lack basic knowledge or empathy about what ladies might require.

When I have a problem I go straight to the top.  So I would ring Dr Newson's Clinic and ask advice.  That would also give me the cost of consultations etc. and something concrete to return to my GP with.
