Hysterectomy Advice please.
« on: December 18, 2019, 09:41:16 AM »

After a long struggle with heavy bleeds due to fibroid's and trying everything under the sun to stop the bleeds, mirena coil and ablation ect I am due to have a hysterectomy in January.
I am on Femeston conti so will have to change HRT afterwards, what is the best a gel?
I have asked to keep my ovaries if healthy or should I just get them removed?
Any advice is appreciated or tips for recovery.

Hi, I had a hysterectomy at the beginning of the year, laproscopic retaining ovaries. I have recovered well and very glad to be rid of fibroids and heavy periods. I didn't bother with ablation.

Try to get as fit and healthy beforehand as possible with diet and exercise, this will really help with recovery.

Laproscopic has a quicker recovery, but expect it to take 12+ weeks to feel back to normal.

You will not be able to lift, bend or stretch for weeks so move all yours stuff around so it it a hand height. I bought a nana grabber which was a lifesaver.

Try not to worry too much, the waiting and thoughts of it are far worse than the actual op.

You will have horrible painful wind and constipation fora little while after. Invest in mint tea and prune juice which will work miracles!

I started estrogel 6 weeks post op when the stockings came off. You don't have to wait that long with transdermal but I did.

Keep the overies. If you look through the posts you'll find people who have really struggled after overies were removed which of course results in a very sudden menopause. Hope the op goes well.

Forgot to say that, yes definitely keep your ovaries unless there is a medical reason not to. They remove the Fallopian tubes which is where ovarian cancer is thought to start anyway if that is your worry, and they will chug on releasing oestrogen and testosterone albeit at lower levels.

If there are problems with them when they get in there they will obviously remove them.

If you need any further support on the lead up to or after your op please don't hesitate to private message me. I'm happy to help x

I forgot to say, if you don't already, start yourpelvic floor excercises. It is important to work these afterwards, forever to hold your bits up.

Also check out Michelle Kenways you tube videos of post op exercise and how to get in and out of bed. You can practice those now which will help a lot. X

Anyone considering doing pelvic floor strengthening exercises (kegels) should do so under the guidance of a women's health physiotherapist, as they may not be necessary. The pelvic floor can become hypertonic, leading to all kinds of problems such as stress incontinence and vulval pain.

I have been hysterctomised and have a hypertonic PF, so am now having to learn to relax it. The world has gone kegels mad.

I had a TVH with repairs 18 months ago.  I retained my ovaries. I am not on any hormones, but I know I am menopausal now. I am 54. Recovery was pretty easy and I feel so much better.

Ooooo that's interesting JP, I didn't know that. I find that I can only do 1 set of pf every other day or it feels uncomfortable. X

I've found an unexpected side effect of testosterone is that I don't have to do pelvic floor exercises any more, presumably it's improved the muscle tone. I haven't had a hysterectomy.
