Saver or Spender
« on: December 12, 2019, 02:19:35 PM »

CLKD gave me the idea.   I'm a spender but recently been thinking that I should cut back as retirement is getting nearer.

 :thankyou:

I love saving.   My sister - money slips through her fingers  ::)

It gives me a sense of achievement  ;).  As a married couple we have been in the lovely position of never not being able to afford anything.

Oh I like a bargain too.   I know someone who ‘makes do' with everything and hardly spends a bean.

If I want something I will research the price and wait for an offer, I love outlet villages but not at this time of year  ::)

I like to know there is money in the bank, you never know what's around the corner.

I don't buy for the sake of it because I don't want to get more cluttered up.  I used to be a big kitchen gadget fan but never used most of it so now I stand there asking myself if I really need it after 42 years of marriage and cooking.  The answer is always no.

I do like quality though and always buy the best shoes and boots I can afford and I would rather buy quality clothes in charity shops than cheap stuff in places like Primark.

Very occasionally I go shopping with a friend and she spends a small fortune on absolute rubbish.  She never has any money left at the end of the month. She tells me she has no savings but she has no children or grandchildren and her partner has a skilled well paid job.  She has retired now and gets a works pension on top of her state pension but never has any money left.

PF - what's 'rubbish' exactly?  We have stuff which Mum calls clutter but it's all got a value.

I'm a saver. Always have been. To the frustration of my friends. I just dont soend and I'm not materialistic, so I don't feel like I'm. Issing out.
Examples ... my saucepans came from my grandad's house, when he passed away. I don't know how long he had them,  but he passed 21 years ago.
I have a hand me down washing machine from my parents. I've had it at least 12 years, they had it for at least 15 before that. She leaks and doesn't always spin. Other than that, she's great !! A bit like myself  ;)

My Dad used to say 'There is no pockets in shrouds'.

I like to spend but within our means.  Particularly holidays and experiences.  We don't know what is round the corner so enjoy it while you can :)

My Mum used to say that, and also 'You can't take it with you'. She saved all her life though, and was a careful spender, but had enough for her old age and liked to enjoy some of the good things while she was still able to.

All my spending is within my means. About to have a new bathroom but have saved  it all first. My cc is paid in full every month.  I wish I could persuade  myself to spend a bit more on holidays than I do but I get this feeling that I am spoiling myself...

No, go for it.  When we get to old to travel at least we will have happy memories.  I'd rather have that than stuff.  Books being the exception. ;D

cheap shoes and sandals that either fall apart or she can't walk in.  Tacky ornaments.  cheap towels that get plucked and threadbare in weeks.  Junk makeup that doesn't do the job she wants.

She ends up binning most of it.  it's her money so it's up to her.
