The diversion route for the closed A83 has reopened after being closed for safety reasons overnight.

The Old Military Road (OMR) has reopened under convoy after an inspection at first light.

The OMR and the A83 were closed a week ago after heavy rain caused 6,000 tonnes of debris to move across the hill.

The OMR reopened on Saturday morning but closed temporarily on Monday due to a forecast for heavy rain.

Work continues to clear tonnes of debris from the A83.

Trowels are to be left in 90 lay-bys in part of the Highlands to help tackle problems with outdoor toileting.

Lochbroom Community Council is also to install signs directing visitors to where there are public toilets.

Chairman Topher Dawson said the trowels would offer an "emergency, last resort" for those who desperately need the loo to dig a hole and bury the waste.



Reminds me that my Dad always had two torches, two trowels and a small child's potty in the car - people have no idea how to leave only footprints these days  .  Apparently I opened the door of the car too soon and the potty fell and rolled down the road, it had a crack in for ever after!

Perhaps our council could keep a trowel beside every public toilet they've closed

I nip into cafes to use the loo if there aren't any public facilities or into the local Town Council Offices  . "I have to use your loo as there aren't any open in the town, then I can go spend money in your local shops"

Just got back from an amazing holiday with my family in Lanzarote, felt completely safe during the whole time out there. So much stricter than here, masks, distancing and police actually enforcing the rules. So sad that the government's exemption does not include this island as they have worked so hard to keep people safe and cases are so low compared to the UK.
Have to pay the price now of a well earned and needed holiday like many others with 14 days quaratine, even though there are more people in the area i live with Covid than where i have just been.
Will now work from home and hopefully the 2 weeks will go fast.

So jealous dierdre,that's one of the islands the cruise we go on goes to but the Xmas cruise has been cancelled now

Unless things change soon the island will be like a ghost town. Lots of businesses and jobs lost, they rely on British tourism so much. Two of my family have been made redundant, they're ok for now as they will get 80% of their wages for a year, hopefully things will be back to normal by then.

I went away last week and anxiety almost ruined it  because I had commitments

Well,we've booked a cruise on P &O for Xmas and new year but I think they will cancel too,still got a hotel booked on Skye though ....just in case

I would go to Skye ........... we ran out of words to describe the beauty of it when we were there, we luckily had FabULUS weather.

Is the 3 Chimneys still there?  A friend went there 10 years ago and enjoyed it.

We are off to Lancashire this month, after our holiday to Majorca & Chester were cancelled I really need this holiday. We also have a week in Cumbria booked for October & week on Anglesey in November.

We normally go abroad 3 times a year.  Did go in February before all this madness started.  We are off in a couple of months for 2 weeks, might go in this country if we aren’t in lockdown again.

Thanks franny,we WERE booked on Cunard but they've cancelled all sailings until May,so I'm guessing P&O will do the same.
My OH is from Skye so know it very well,he's taking me to the chimneys if we go in December,we're staying at the cuillins hotel,been before and it's FABULOUS. Where north are you off to?

Pitlochry has beautiful surrounding countryside,been there many times AND we stayed in a lodge
