hi hurdity

interesting article and i have a question if young women reproductive age produce 3/4 times more tesosterone then estrogen why do we have to have a good level of estrogen before commencing tesosterone therapy ?

well said jaycee !

'that's like saying to someone well your skinny so what or your obese so what stop obsessing over it when it may impact that person and cause a whole host of mental health issues .

i am still young and indured 12 yrs of suffering prior to hysterectomy which was correct decision but at 35 yrs very hard to accept especially when hrt hasn't been the wonder drug for me !

and to be still only 40 and indure menopause is tuff if i was natural menopause it may not of impacted me so much as all my friends would be at the same stage .

sammijane, i do sympathise with you, especially at your age,i am much older but it still has an impact on me, wouldn't bother me as much if my hair was just thinner, but having bare or almost bare patches which are very noticeable does bother me a lot
I have too much hair for a wig, which i don't want anyway, but the bare bits need something to cover them, and even toppers are expensive,
Still hoping it will grow back as Dermatologist said
I have the stitches [3] out on friday and should get results about a week after ,keeping fingers x it gives me some hope

Yes we have more testosterone than oestrogen but we have  approx 10 times less T than men and some other ratio more oestrogen than men. It is the ratio of T to O that is important (but not exact) hence the need to make sure we have enough O as our main female hormone. We don't want to develop androgenic (male) characteristics which is what can happen if too much T relative to O.

hi birdy

i was on the gel yes but advised to stop it for three months to see if it was causing or contributing to my hairloss this was advised by dermatology

the recent post from Bear is interesting that the gel had caused hairloss in dogs who have been exposed to it by there owners which is plausible considering i think it's caused my hairloss but as i?m unsure if it's the gel itself or an imbalance that triggered my hair to shed so the next step would be to try the gel and utrogestan ! if my hair sheds worse then it did on estrogen alone then i know not to take progesterone and as it's better off the gel i would look to change estrogen administration if it stays as it is and i feel great then i shall continue on both !

Don't get too excited about that weird study about dogs. Nothing to do with humans and not even a proper study. You'll see the thread - I've just posted on it....it's crazy (well thinking it has anything to do with women except to consider protecting their pets....)!

Sammijane,it is Livial, i did stop and started again like you, but recently read that it has caused much thicker hair in some people, in fact my daughter said hers grew thicker on livial [Tibilone] but on Femosten it is still shedding, Dr told her it will shed for 6 months then stop,Easter will be her 6 months up

hi jaycee

i was on estrogel but it was shedding prior to starting this after try the patch ellest solo mx40 then stopping starting vagifem but has continued to thin so wondering if it's just estradiol i have stopped the gel 8 weeks now and shedding improved but hair feel thinner lol but i wonder if for me it's an imbalance as i took estrogen only no progesterone to balance it . the one you take i believe makes all 3 hormones x

Hi SammieJane- re hair loss. I too have suffered from this and find it deeply upsetting. It started I think in perimenopause and I didn't notice a big difference until probably a year after I had been on various combined HRT regimes. I came off it briefly and then back on patches and Utrogestan. As you know, oestren is generally considered to promote growth, progesterone can make it worse. I understand that you only take oestrogen.

I eventually went to a trichologist who diagnosed telogen effluvium, started me on iron and vitamin D supplements with a scalp spray ( after a few months ) and it has helped with regrowth.
HOWEVER, my hair volume and density will never go back to what it once was. It's difficult to get your head round this, there are things you can do to help, but the long and short of it is that some women are either genetically and or biologically disposed to it and others aren't. If you look around you will see middle aged and elderly women with great hair, some will be taking HRT , others not . A significant number ( around 40-50% ) will experience thinning and hair loss. Some of this will be easier to treat than others.
I sense that you are driving yourself crazy trying to figure out what is causing this so you can take steps to rectify it. I'm not certain that you?ll find definitive answers to this. We are all different and react in different ways.
It's taken me a long time to reach this conclusion, do what I can in terms of addressing the problem, indeed ,even accepting it. Ultimately I think it's the luck of the draw.

hi there

for me though i've had ovaries removed and hysterectomy and i didn't have hairloss intill i started hrt i went 4 years after op 2014 to 2018 with no hrt hair was thicker and grew quicker so did my nails to since i started hrt estrogen only my hair growth slowed thinned receded and nails stopped growing. estradiol can cause hairloss it's not always the progesterone i've been told this by manufacturer of the estrogen plus tricologist plus dermatology it's same as when women are pregnant some women loose hair whilst pregnant to increased hormones others loose it after the baby is born my hair didn't do either really but i don't get it as was fine on the contraceptive pill so i?m not sensitive to hormones so my conclusion is that it's estrogen on its own since i've stopped it it's virtually stopped shedding it is a mystery
