Four Month Update HRT Free
« on: November 11, 2019, 07:51:01 PM »

Hello Ladies.

I have now been without  HRT for four months so I'm posting an update as promised.

I am 63 and nine years post meno and was using  two pumps of Oestrogel and 100mcg of Utrogestan vaginally daily. I had been on HRT in some form for six years but I still had symptoms so I thought I would see how I felt naturally.

Basically things are going well. I have times when I feel normal, times when I actually feel good and times when I feel wobbly.  On HRT my problems were surges of anxiety with jittery, quivery sensations in my abdomen,  a feeling that I might cry and  sudden low mood. I also had some VA issues and often woke two to three times per night to use the bathroom but always got back to sleep. I also felt very tired not surprisingly. Soon after giving up HRT I developed more intense VA but Replens vaginal moisturiser is helping control that atm. The last few nights I have struggled to get to sleep which may be a new symptom. Hot flushes and night sweats were not much of a problem before and have pretty much disappeared. In summary I would say that my previous symptoms have become much milder though are still present unfortunately . VA has been added to the mix but is manageable and my newly acquired sleep difficulties are a worry.

I will carry on and update the forum again in a months time. On the whole I'm optimistic that I'm on the right path and that I'm reaching the stage where I can put all this horrible meno rubbish being me but I guess time will tell!

I hope the above is helpful to you ladies and of course I continue to wish you all well.

Hi Kathleen

That's really good news, may it continue ;)

I am having a bad time just now with anxiety although it feels like something more serious. still using 2 pumps of gel. Its a difficult one - is it the gel causing my symptoms as it always starts around 2 hours after I apply or is it menopause ??? I am now age 60.

Take care Wx

Thanks for the update Kathleen. You are very brave. I am terrified at what will happen to me when I stop HRT - which I surely will at some point because of having to put up with the bleeds and not wanting to take prog the whole time!

Like stellajane says though - not sure why you haven't continued with Vagifem estriol cream or similar as this will really keep long term VA issues at bay without side effects. There are some new products around too which are very gentle - Intrarosa is one - a DHEA capsule.

I must say I don't think I would cope well with not sleeping - as I now sleep very deeply - almost too deeply - but I remember the tossing and turning with the feeling hot, and night sweats and wouldn't want to have to go through that again!

Anyway do hope you find a way to feel well and sleep well for most of the time. There are quite a few of us now in our 60's with a variety of approaches to this post-menopause thing....

Hello ladies

Thank you all for your comments.

Today has been fairly typical in that I have felt 'normal' all day but a minor surge started early afternoon and is bubbling away in the background and  my sleep difficulties are continuing unfortunately. All round positive but also a little frustrating.

Just to be clear ladies I have never used Vagifem  as I felt I didn't need it. I realise now that my systemic HRT was helping as things definitely deteriorated when I stopped using it. So far the non oestrogenic moisturiser is keeping me comfortable but I certainly haven't ruled out topical treatment for the future.

I will keep everyone informed as my experiences may help others and help them to decide if they want to try taking a break from HRT and try ' going back to factory settings' lol.

Thanks again and wishing you all well.

Hi K

I am at 10.5 weeks off. Doing ok also. Sleep is a bit more erratic but i have not had any zero nighters like when peri hit. I am like you in that i am feeling more normal than i ever did on hrt but then i have little waves of awfulness such as feeling like bursting into tears, more anxious, anger, warmer moments. Is this what its like for you? No migraines for me in that 10.5 weeks so thats a huge bonus as the hrt was 100 percent causing them.

Hi Kathleen, sorry to hear you're not sleeping that well but glad to hear you're otherwise good. I'm two and a half months off HRT now and actually feel a lot better off it than on it.  I usually have one hot flush a night and the covers get thrown off (yes, even in this cold weather) for a few minutes. My VA kicked in when I stopped HRT but Vagifem has helped that a lot and had stopped me needing to get up to go to the loo. One thing I've noticed though is that my nails aren't as strong which makes me worry a bit about my bones! I think the two are connected? Good to hear your updates.
Regards

Joney great update. I am also better off but still have symptoms but they are probably less than side effects. Were you on hrt long and did you have awful meno symptoms? Xxx

Hi Alua, I was only on HRT a year. Started it a year after my periods stopped as I had several weeks of insomnia that drove me potty. I had flushes but i felt i could cope with them. The HRT was wonderful for the insomnia and also helped with the flushes. Luckily my mood wasn't effected by the menopause. I stopped it as I was suffering silent migraines and thought that rather than mess around with trying to cope with increasingly unavailable non oral regimens I would see if I would be ok without it. And amazingly so far it is fine, except for the VA which I was not expecting. I was so ignorant! Also my legs now feel a lot better, I got a lot of tightness and cramps in my legs whilst on HRT  I hope things continue to be ok. I wouldn't hesitate to go back on it should things go belly up as I'm only 54.

Joney interesting you also suffered migraine on hrt, seems to be a pretty common side effect. I am still peri but periods very sparse shall we say. Insomnia at onset of peri was my most horrific symptom. I am feeling very hot atm but nothing major and sleep a bit hit and miss x
