Loo roll!
« on: November 08, 2019, 04:53:58 PM »

Don't know if anyone can help me; it's an odd question I know. But I am asking it here because I know that you are all people who don't mind discussing slightly sensitive issues. I have a friend coming to stay soon who gets through an inordinate amount of loo roll - I am really talking a lot. He has sole use of the guest bathroom when he visits, and let me stress here that I don't usually monitor how much loo roll my guests get through. But last time I put 9 new loo rolls (the expensive quilted sort) in the cupboard before he came and after a weekend stay (came Friday night and went on Monday morning) there were only 4 left! Which explains why on the Saturday afternoon he told me I had a blocked loo (which was cleared with difficulty)! Like I said, I don't usually notice whether people take a new loo roll out of the cupboard or not. But five in two days??
To the best of my knowledge he didn't have any sort of gut problem so I am wondering if it's an OCD thing. Anyway - more to the point, can anyone recommend me some highly dissolvable loo roll with which to fill the guest bathroom cupboard before he visits again? I really don't want to risk another blocked loo.
Ta!

Hello Wrennie.

I eat a whole foods, plant based diet and I get through a lot of loo roll! Sorry if tmi but my stools are large and very soft so my visits can require a lot of wiping.  Our downstairs look doesn't have great drainage so when I have a bowl of water I always put some down the toilet to help push anything through that may get stuck. I do the same In our upstairs bathroom and  I have a large plastic bottle in the cupboard for this very purpose. I did buy quilted paper once and that almost caused a problem so I just buy regular now.

I wonder if you could make a habit of adding water to the toilet through the day as that may help keep your drains clear and ready for your visitors next, we'll, visit lol.

Hope this is helpful and take care.

Could you put a lidded bag-lined bin the toilet and ask him to use that?
There are plenty of places where the toilets can't take lots of paper.
When you take him to his room/let him in, just say “oh, by the way, the last time you were here, you're right, the toilet did get blocked. Can you use the bin this time please?” Or you could even make a little sign and stick it by the loo if mentioning it is embarrassing
Or
Leave no nice loo rolls and just those boxes of crinkly paper we used to gave at school  ;D

You friend is not alone Wrennie in using an inordinate amount of loo roll - my youngest son uses huge amounts.  Heaven knows why - he is not OCD and no he doesn't have a gut problem. I have questioned him numerous times...can you just imagine the conversations but I'm his mother so... :-X  I have had to put it down to being 6'5" 18 stone and telling him he has a large....**se!
Now don't go checking out the size of your friends bottom  ;D ;D ;D (you are not going to be able to stop yourself now are you?)

I'm not sure about easily dissolvable toilet tissue but you can get different plys. Usually guests get the best stuff in house the really thick stuff but in this instance maybe put the cheap 2 ply there so that it is quantity instead of quality - it might go down easier.  You can also get toilet wipes (like wet wipes) in packs but very very thin.  A pack of those might be good.

I can't believe I just wrote all that  ;D ;D best of luck

Your theory is correct Ladybt. I use loads of loo paper and I have a big bum. I definitely won't be invited to stay at yours, Wrennie.
Make him use the bin (gross as it sounds) x

In some parts of Europe one has to use a bin 'cos there isn't drainage.

I find that quiled stuff a) doesn't wipe well as it's too thick, b) isn't flexible enough and c) simply doesn't flush.  So use a different type of loo roll, not too cheap, would suffice.  Don't put as many rolls in the cupboard? Is there a brush ....... is there enough 'drop' from the loo to the drain anyway, there's supposed to be a % slope for effective drainage.

Some people wipe, others rub and polish.  Apparently.

Don't put those wet wipes there because although they are marked disposable it takes years and they get to the sewage plants far too soon and foul up the works!!  Better to leave a covered flask of water if necessary.

For a weekend one roll, not too thick, no spares in the cupboard.
Would be tempting to tell him you are experiencing other cultures and bucket of water only.  :)

CLKD - they are not actually wet wipes they are "wet toilet tissue" - that's what they call them!
and "...some people wipe, others rub and polish. Apparently.."!! ;D ;D ;D

Dear Lord the subjects we cover here....the sanitary arrangements of other cultures...whether anyone has a brush...the % slope on a U bend...bottom wiping techniques... ;D ;D ;D is there no end to our knowledge and experience....poor Wrennie she is either going to be totally mortified she ever mentioned it...or in the loo p***ing with laughter!!  Where are you Wrennie...tell us how helpful we have been??

Actually seriously, it is no laughing matter to be honest - above mentioned youngest son has blocked many a loo he has visited much to my own mortification - What to do in such circumstances - not such an odd question after all.

Give him the plunger and rubber gloves in his suitcase?  At his age  >:(.  Or have a composting loo in a shed for his use - at the bottom of the garden ?  The rule I have here is that men sit to pee at night, due to many dropping dead when getting out to go the bathroom in the early hours.  There's a physical reason but I can't remember the name for it.  If I hear men lifting the lid in the night I shout.  LOUDLY!  Sit your a**** down!

Our toilet here is crap aswell, ( no pun intended) 😂 it blocks up all the time. We do have a brush at the side, and my OH has professional toilet unblocker rods...🤦‍♀️ It's true...
We all use far too much toilet roll in this house! It costs me a small fortune, at one point, I thought someone was eating it! 😂 We only use the quilted type..it's softer on the bum...

Wrennie - I think the combination of a lower ply loo roll, leaving just one roll and a spare, plus a bin, is your best option. These kind of issues with guests are very delicate but also bothersome.
I hope his visit goes well xx
