Stomach and burping problems
« on: October 26, 2019, 09:17:59 AM »

Hi Ladies

Is there a connection between stomach issues, burping and menopause? I'm 45 years old had a hysterectomy (still got ovaries) last year and I'm menopausal.
Had burping for year now, gave up telling my doctor as she didn't seem concerned, I would average about 50 burps a day on my good days over 100 times a day.
I'm on day 35 of stomach problems. Have done a poo test (for bacteria), wee test and blood test, all results normal. I stop dairy for 8 days now it's help a little bit. I'm now wondering if it could be IBS? I don't seem to get bloating problems just sore stomach. Lately I can get days were my stomach is fine but can eat something that triggers my pain again, like last night green curry with cauliflower rice? I found on the internet that cauliflower and broccoli can trigger IBS. The only other time I had stomach issues this year is when I was on Remifemmi for three weeks, so came off as I had ovaries problems too.
Any advice will be welcomed.

Do you drink fizzy drinks, including fizzy mineral water?

My wind and indigestion problems disappeared when I gave up fizzy water.  :)

Hi Shadyglade,
I don't drink anything but water (lots of it), one glass of almond milk at night (natural melatonin to help me sleep). And about 4 cups of camomile tea a week. No fizzy drink as it doesn't agree with me.

I'm in the throes of this too. Recent hysto retaining ovaries, had hiatus hernia for maybe 20 years and periodic acid reflux. I'm so careful what I eat and drink and do to not irritate it but it's gone crackers this last couple of weeks. I'm going to have a go at raising my bedhead and look at my diet again. So annoying! I literally feel your pain x

Poor you, I have had spells where IBS and reflux is aggravated.

I was belching all the time, acid reflux etc. Sleeping propped up messed my neck up as well  ::) ::)  I have to be so careful nowadays, gave up the vast majority of dairy food because I can literally sound like a bullfrog! What has helped me is eating little and often, and not leaving too long between meals. Apparently the drop in oestrogen can affect your stomach acid, and also slacken muscles, of which one is the sphincter at the top of the stomach.

My friend swears by Apple Cider Vinegar (capsules, don't worry)..I went down the omeprazole route about 4 years ago for a year but when I was still needing gaviscon to accompany me at night time, I stopped it.

May be worth looking at homeopathy as well.

Go and read Dr Koufmann's books.
My reflux started with ridiculous burping! It was the start of Perimenopause for me (although I did not know it). I was 44 when the burping, stomach issues, weight gain and anxiety started xx

Hi Mogster
My burping is a lot smaller than yours, but when I do burp it usually in groups off three or more. Lucky when I go to bed the burping and stomach seems to settle down for the night.
I do eat lots off meals, but my main meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) can be big. I do eat a lot and don't have a weight problem, I'm slowly dropping weight as I gave up about 90% off sugar. I gave up sugar to help with either menopausal or fibromyalgia. Lots of stabbing pain that moves around my body? I'm waiting to see a rheumatologist early November.

Hi Agatha, I would agree that burping was the start for me to about September late year, then came virginal atrophy, sore eye, back pains, ramdom body pains that are short and move through out my body, brain fog and now the stomach issues. I've never had a blood test to prove I'm perimenopausal, as my doctor said they are not reliable, and she just goes by my symptoms. I just Goggled Dr Kaufman's book and I don't feel as if I have acid reflux? Just burping

And interesting Sparkle about hormones messing with your digestion.

Thanks everyone for your reply's

Hi. Huge, enormous , drain like burps was one of the first Peri symptoms for me. Also suffered from huge amounts of gas the other end in the mornings, much to delight of family.  Queue many GP visits, none of whom seemed surprised (One GP actually said wait until your're 50 it will only get worse and that pre-packed lettuce set her off). Did all the poo tests etc - told it was IBS/hormones.  Was given Ranitidine but that just bunged me up.   For me it was  cheap bread/gluten / fried food e.g. pizza/batter on anything that flared it up. I have also reduced caffeine and alcohol. Green tea/chamomile seems to help.  Mint/peppermint makes me MUCH worse so watch that.  Try cutting things out to see what helps. (Although 5 years on there are still times when it flared up for no reason). I'm sure Anxiety makes it worse too. I tried to look on the bright side and lit one of my enormous farts (through my jeans) which was the highlight of my kids summer holiday and one of the only laughs I've had all year.

Squeaker's fart lighting has also been one of my favourite laughs this year!
Lyncola - hopefully you don't have acid reflux but your symptoms do sound a bit like it to me. You don't necessarily have to have all the symptoms and of course it can come and go xx
Hope everyone is well xx

Squeaker99
;D You made my day with lighting your farts.
Funny I actually finding I don't fart as much as I used to.
I told my husband who does a lot of farts that you lit your fart, he now wants to try it.

Thanks for your reply AgathaC
stellajane I have not been check for gallstones, I just goggled interesting as I do get pain in that area. My pain comes and goes and I get pain in other parts of my body to, it's why my doctor got me booked in with a rheumatologist. Am I right in assuming that if you had gallstones the pain would be bad and constant?
squeaker99 I think not having dairy has help a little bit, and I seem to be okay with bread and pizza.     (homemade of course my husband Italian). I been looking on the internet about high and low foodmap diet and I'm playing around with my diet trying to work out what setting me off. I have a pear as part of my breakfast very morning and it's on high foodmap, so for the next couple days I'm going to stop and see what happens. It's interesting how menopausal can play around with your body so much.

I only started having issues with my stomach when I hit meno. When I first started hrt, it got worse, pains, bloating, terrible wind, diarrhoea, although that's settled down now.
But I can't eat all the things like I used to, onions, garlic, most vegetables, all upset me now whereas before I could eat shed loads of them...x

Hi,
I too am suffering from gut issues. I am peri menopausal and it is reeking havoc. However, I thought the gut issue was a separate issue? Inflammation/discomfort is my main issue. It has affected my eating habits resulting in me losing 10 lbs. Many women might be happy about this but not me as I was already slim/thin.
I've been to my Dr 3 times over the last 6 wks so far I've had blood taken, urine sample and tomorrow I am going for an ultrasound and a breath test.
Can the menopause really cause all these issues? I hope it is the menopause and nothing nasty🤞

Wolfie, sounds familiar. I lost a stone over about 6 months and now look thin and wrinkled! My understanding is decreasing levels of estrogen can cause this. The menopause clinic said this to me when I was experiencing problems and HRT made a difference to me. I had a CT colonoscopy to rule out more serious conditions, which may be offered to you.
