Advice on peri symptoms please.
« on: September 29, 2019, 10:45:37 PM »

3 yrs ago in June I was diagnosed peri.

I had spotting inbetween periods.  Had bloods and ultrasound and nothing was wrong.

Also have acid reflux since peri. Also have a period straight after a period since peri. This year I went for three months with no period.

I'm 47, menopause early runs in the family. Never had a missed or late period.

Does all of this sound peri?

It all sounds similar to my symptoms. I have acid reflux too and never thought about the link. To be honest I don't think I had reflux before peri either. Are you taking HRT or just managing? I'd love to know if HRT could help reflux amongst other things?!!
Best wishes x

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I'm not on HRT.

I seem to be managing ok.

I was on max strength prescribed esomerapzole and ranitidine, the doctors asked me to try and get off It, so I used gaviscon advanced tabs, half 3 times a day and I was ok. Since then I have found drinking coke with meals has stopped me needing the gaviscon!!!! Unbelievable, but I am not complaining.

I've never even had indigestion before this!!!!

The pain was unbelievable, sharp pains in the roof of my mouth, eyes burning and watering with the acid.

I hope you are managing ok. XxxxX

Hi ChiChi!!

Yes that does sound like peri  ::) I'm the same age as you and my symptoms were the same, about 5 years ago I started with the "skippy" periods, and through the roof reflux. I only took omeprazole for a year, when I had to take gaviscon at night as well I realised it wasn't really helping! Now just a rennie as and when. If I eat the wrong thing (or not enough, or a combination of both) my guts will literally feel like they are boiling..

Sounds like you're largely doing ok??

Honeybean are you having any other symptoms?

Hi Chi Chi and Mog,

I'm not on HRT either but seriously considering it, not for the reflux (as I hadn't made the link) but for raging hot flushes and night sweats.

I go to a really good health food shop and has bought some great products for my acid reflux/sore tummy which I think helped. Not got on top of the hot flushes though!  :'(

Chi Chi I am amazed by drinking Coke with meals works!! Who knew?! For me caffeine and fizzy drinks are one of my triggers along with eating late and of course the wrong things.

I did go down the Omperazole and Ranitidine route too like you Mog but they kept wearing off. The gp was happy to keep prescribing different things rather than get to the bottom of it.  ::) In the end I decided to try and manage it myself. I came off all meds and I went down a slightly different route of Aloe Vera and kefir. They seemed to help as well as some remedies from the health food shop. All gets expensive though.

Don't laugh but the other thing I did was to raise my bed up on bricks at the head end. I read that it stops the acid reflux at night. I definitely works for me and I don't wake up with a sore throat in the morning!  ;D ;D

Good luck x

Thanks for your replies, I wish I had asked before, it just helps to know I am not alone xx

My reflux has worn off after a year, thank God.

I think drinking the coke with a meal is almost as if treating like with like. You've seen what happens when you drop a penny in some coke, it comes out clean. The coke is acidic and it's removing the acid.

Also drinking cider vinegar with the mother is reported to work.

I think these peri symptoms are a bit like grief, you have to live through them and they pass. That's how my symptoms have been.

Raising the bed is one of the recommended things to help with reflux. Also I found eating fresh strawberries and melon was very good as the are alkaline and it reduces the acid.

hi ChiChi

I'm 47 and have has peri symptoms for 2 years now. At first I had awful indigestion, reflux , trouble eating certain foods  causing real stomach problems, IBS symptoms too  :-\ I never thought for one minute it was anything to do with menopause. I had an endoscopy and the other one too  :) but everything was fine . I began HRT around 4 months ago now. I think it is certainly helping me in certain ways. I still suffer from IBS with some foods but the reflux/indigestion is better than it was. My anxiety seems a lot better , with all these changes I kept thinking there was something seriously wrong with me  . It's one hell of a journey this Menopause  :-\

Hi TaylorJ

Glad to hear you are in control. That's great news.

I am determined to stay off HRT. Drugs are just too much for me, they knock me about.

But I may have to resort to HRT if necessary, I would prefer to try the black cohosh or sage from the health shop.

I congratulate anyone who takes HRT and gets relief, nobody should have to suffer.

Wow - never occurred to me that reflux was a peri symptom! I've had omeprozole or lansoprozole on and off for the last 5 years (since peri symptoms started) but thought it was a side effect of some other meds I'm on, or because of being overweight. Interested to read that other peri people have it too

Hi booroo, sorry for hijacking thread-my GP wants me to come off cerazette in case it's causing bloating and joint pain. Am concerned as read that people get insomnia after quitting- did you experience this? My sleep is really good at present and don't want to rock the boat

Hi Ladies, there is a section on the forum that lists symptoms of peri/meno and I will warn you it looks terrifyingly long! and there are things on it that you would never have dreamed of  ::) and unfortunately things that doctors never ever clock as being related to peri/meno. Its worth a look because then if they crop up you will know what it is instead of worrying about them!  :)
I found it very helpful. Don't worry too much though, some of us get nearly all of them and some of us hardly get any but it's handy to know what could be expected instead of living in the dark! Oh and acid reflux, tummy issues, bloating, joint pain, insomnia are all on the list!!
It's worth knowing about joint pain because GP's have us running to specialists for fibromyalgia, rheumatoid conditions, orthopaedics etc when it's just good old meno!  When oestrogen drops, the muscles get lax and don't hold the joints in place properly causing pain!  If you are happy to have hrt and up the oestrogen to where it should be then hey ho the pain goes away (for most of us, most of the time!)  I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia but turns out it wasn't!  :)

happy to have you all on board if you are new posters  :welcomemm:

Check it out, worth a read
