Doctors still not sure on HRT/MENO
« on: September 28, 2019, 07:54:02 AM »

I've just read a post about someone getting the wrong cream off the doctors. It made me think about a couple of  incidents myself.
When premique had been discontinued my friend (who was on it)was put on a patch instead, when I asked her what progestogen she was on she said what do you mean? I said well you have your womb so need a tablet to. I think she was quite shocked as always says how helpful the doctor is ect.
She called the doctors who got straight back to her saying yes she should be and was so apologetic.

Now I was in the doctors this week and trying to get a three month patch prescription just incase boots can get any, the doctor went through my repeats asking if still needed, he came to the ustrogesten tablet and said do you still need this!! I said yes and he said what for! It dose say they are the progesterone tablets as well so was quite shocked at this.

Just goes to show groups like this are a godsend as I've had more info and advice off here then I've had in the 20 years of meno I've had to deal with. Xx

Yes it is still shocking isn't it Butterfly22?

The same thing happened to me - I noticed that progesterone had been taken off my repeats - probably because I don't ask for it very often as I am on a long cycle and the dosage given for one repeat is actually too much.

I sent a message ( through my online record) saying why has this been taken off - of course I need progesterone if I'm taking hRT - it was just put back on again - but no comment made or anything. It turns out it was the chief pharmacist at the practice dispensary - reviewing the meds and just deleting anything that hadn't been asked for for a while. Shocking eh at the level of ignorance- without knowing what the individual patient is doing and making a decision just like that!

Much worse for your friend - and this has happened before from reports on the forum. I would be demanding a scan to check the womb lining once she starts the progestogen ( presumably she is not on mini pill nor has a Mirena coil?).

It does seem that there is still a lot of educating to do!!!

Hurdity she went onto a combined hrt pill after that.
These stories are shocking, I lost my faith in most doctors years ago, fighting to find out what was wrong with me and both with Meno and ME I had to suggest these and do my own research.

Giving out wrong pills ect could prove fatal, it dose make me wonder how some are doing the job. Not all as some great doctors out there but a few do make me worry. Xx

Ive posted on the other thread about this with my experience. With wrong meds.

But I've got to tell you all what happened yesterday

I took my mum to eye clinic appt at local hospital. The clinic is manic.  corridors and waiting areas crammed full of people.

A aporter brought a very sick looking young girl in a wheelchair from a ward and put her in the middle of everyone.

An  hour later we were all still there and she started talking to me. She told me she had suspected bacterial meningitis and had come from an isolation room!!!

Anyone entering her room has to be masked, gowned up and gloved. And they'd plonked her in the middle of a jam packed outpatients department.for a  hour!!!
.
The eye clinic is full of elderly people and kids. How shocking is that?

I felt very sorry for her but I moved away very quickly!!

I had a HRT review with a female doctor, she wasn't the one who i normally see and she asked why i was rubbing the Estrogel onto my upper arms and not using it vaginally, she went bright red when i pointed out it was systemic HRT and not topical estrogen.

Hello ladies.

These stories are scary but probably not so rare. I have always kept notes and records of any treatment I've had and I do the same for the family.  I also check the drugs dispensed by the pharmacy before I leave the premises. I accept that anyone can make a mistake but we should take some responsibility for our treatment and of course we are highly motivated to get it right.

Just to add to the tale of woe my MIL was on a bucket load of drugs and at every doctor's visit they were increased and at every emergency hospital visit they were decreased or changed completely. My husband took it upon himself to monitor all her meds as it was too confusing for her. On one occasion the hospital doctor decided she didn't need the daily steroid she was taking and refused to give it to her. When we visited and realised what had happened we reminded them that she had Addison 's  Disease,  an Autoimmune condition requiring steroids which  should never be stopped suddenly. Needless to say she was put back on the pills immediately.  Doesn't fill you with confidence does it ladies.

Take care everyone.

I'd definitely not be in a good place, these stories are crazy. Like you say though no surprise. I started an early meno and have had more support on here over then years then any doctor or hospital has given me.
These days if you don't have money your at the bottom of the pile.x

"However, a pharmacist taking progesterone off a script for a woman also requesting oestrogen .....  ??? the mind boggles."

Yes the thing is there was no consultation with me, the patient - no phone call, nothing! Scary eh?

jaypo that's priceless!

Butterfly22 - glad your friend is OK.

However I still do have faith in the NHS but because it has been starved of cash, feel it is our responsibility to help with the education from the bottom up, and to educate ourselves and each other through fora like this. I feel sorry for the women who do not have the knowledge or skills to find out the information for themsleves and who may well suffer through some of these mistakes.

Tinkerbell ,do you have the same Dr i saw who gave me Estrogel instead of Estriol, or Ovestin, the mind boggles
RE; meds being taken off the computer when not requested often, i was told if they are not repeated after 3 months the computer automatically knocks them off,
Also Drs you have never seen before just knocking meds off your prescription, because they don't know your history ,but decide you don't need them, happened to me

I know, I could not get in with my normal doctor so this doctor is new to the surgery and only seen him a couple of times.
I'm there asking for patches surly he would know I need a progesterone too! I feel like if I go to the doctors I need to tell them what I want, if I go for help or a solution I'll not get the best outcome xx
