HRT question
« on: September 17, 2019, 01:11:43 PM »

Hi all,

The NHS website advises that you only need to take Progesterone every 3 months if your periods are irregular:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt/types/

My GP told me to take it for 14 days each month, and my periods were irregular when I first went to see her.

Bit confused now.  Does anyone here take Progesterone every 3 months?

Artmourse - they are referring to the proprietary product "Tridestra" where the progestogen is taken for two weeks in a 12 week cycle.

If you look at this link and scroll down you will see it listed:
https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/perimeno.php

Tridestra: Estradiol valerate 2mg
Medroxyprogesterone 20mgs for 14 days/3 month pack.

Generally long cycles like this are not recommended if you are early-mid-peri as you can get breakthrough bleeding if ovulation stills happens farily often, but there is presumably no reason not to use it if you are post-menopausal and don't want to have to take progestogens the whole time, as well as late peri as suggested for the product. You could go to the forum home page and do a search but I seem to remember that maybe bleeds are quite heavy on this regime for s ome women so might not be that popular, depending on absorption of course?

Ah, OK, thanks.  I've no idea whether I'm late peri or post now after being on HRT for a couple of years.

Your doc was giving the right advice as you were peri-menopausal when prescribed HRT - I don't think this brand is prescribed very often so maybe your doc was unaware or maybe your periods were still coming eg every 2-3 months? If you don't like the progestogen part of the HRT cycle then why not ask for this one ( if it is available) and give it a whirl?
