Irritating cough
« on: September 14, 2019, 10:16:52 AM »

In October DH had a cold which he kindly passed to me  >:( within 3 days I had symptoms.  We both coughed, 24/7.  Snuffled.  He improved, I continued to cough night and day from November until March.  9 days completely free, then I developed an irritating throat clearing with occasionally coughing spasms each day.  Night time I am fine.

DH has been pushing me to make a GP appt. but I'm not in any pain.  He says that it's like living in a TB Ward  ::).  As soon as I was out of bed this morning the throat clearing began  :-\.  If I go to the bathroom/back in the night, no problems.  It's like there's something stuck ....... I do have background feelings of reflux  :-\ but what do I say to the GP.

It's non productive.  Irritating.  No pain ............

Hiya

Yes, you should go to the GP because you have a cough that hasn't resolved over a prolonged period of time.  BUT, my boss has had a cough since about January and it's just clearing up now.  It's really quite worried him.  Started with a cold, just didn't go away.  Oh, I should mention he's a doctor.  He ended up having loads of blood tests, scans, seeing a cardiologist, etc.  They couldn't find anything wrong with him.  He really did sound like he had bronchitis.  He didn't.  In the end they decided it was a particular virus that showed him those symptoms.

This isn't going to sound nice, but have you tried inhalations (olbas oil and hot water in a bowl with a tea towel over your head) and then gone for a really good nose and throat clear.

Also, phlegm actually performs a function for the body, it's one of the ways we get the virus or bacteria out, but if you're persistently throat clearing you can end up in a vicious circle because your body produces more phlegm as a response to the clearing.  Is it productive for you at all?

Best

Hi! non productive in that I don't 'spit' but I have a feeling of mucus in the throat hence the clearing in the day.  Nose much clearer as my allergies are dampened, DH  :-* does a Deep Clean with the Hoovery-thingy weekly.

I don't want anything invasive  :-\

A metro pot or whatever they're called?

I can't imagine why you'd have to have anything invasive if you just checked in with the doctor.

Have you looked up post nasal drip?

Best, EK. X

I use Sterimar (from Boots), that is sea water nasal spray, twice or three times a day. It helps in cleaning sinuses, and keeping them moist.

But, I think you should see your GP to check your lungs!

I've found out that anything with ginger aggravates my irritating cough reflex.  Even with the capsule in the morning.  We use ginger in most recipes  ::)
