Does testosterone help anxiety?
« on: September 08, 2019, 05:42:17 PM »

Hello everyone

Am just coming to the end of my three month trial period of HRT ( 2pumps Oestrogel and 100mg Utogestan for 12 days). Am 7 years post meno but my menopause specialist recommended cyclical utrogestan as I have had an endometrial ablation and in his opinion continuous progesterone not a good idea.

Anyway, on the whole I am feeling a lot better than I was three months ago. Flushes have all but gone, I have far more energy and am feeling generally much calmer ( which has been noted by my lovely husband and two sons).

So far so good..... however, the weird thing is that I still wake in the early hours with the dreaded adrenaline surge and feeling of anxiety. It's not every night but would say it's a good 4/5 out of seven .
Havw tried cutting out caffeine and alcohol ( only drink one glass of wine a week), to no avail.

Am keen to get to the bottom of this, I have done some research and it seems testosterone might help.

Does anyone have experience of this?

I have my review appt in a couple of weeks so will raise it then but just wanted to know if anyone has found testosterone helps.

As always any comments much appreciated.

Thanks

I'm on testosterone mainly for libido and the aches & pains in my joints. I only suffer from mild anxiety, I noticed after a month or so that any anxiety had more or less disappeared but having said that it came back again. Hopefully someone who has more experience will be along to answer. Take a look at the anxiety support & testosterone threads, there could be some answers there as well.

I think that testosterone helps me with anxiety immensely. At least I handle it better for sure. It helped me to come back to what resembles old me, if you know what I mean. I feel far more myself when on it. Mind you, that old was fearless and fast. Now I more resemble dead cat. But coming back to testosterone and anxiety, most went away with it. I feel much stronger, and not like that crying, frightened, vibrating wreck I was.

Hope it helps!

Thank you for your responses ladies much appreciated.

Orrla your comment about the dead cat made me laugh out loud- could be describing myself there!

It was oestrogen that sorted my anxiety but it took 3 months. T helped libido, weak muscles, motivation and energy levels (not cured better but than before)

Hello ladies

Westie  - Unfortunately I've nothing useful to add ( no change there then lol ).  But ever since this meno business started I have always felt calm when waking during the  night, the jitters etc only happening during the day. I've often wished that it was the other way around but of course being woken up by adrenaline surges is not pleasant either. Hopefully some ladies will be along with a solution for you.

Orrla and Sheila - It's amazing isn't it that for some women more oestrogen tackles anxiety whilst for others it's testosterone.  Also Orrla, I  recognise your description of being a crying, frightened, vibrating wreck and I'm pleased that you have found a regime that works.

Take care everyone.

Thanks again ladies for all your responses. I know we are all different and therefore react differently to the various hormones.

Am thinking/ hoping testosterone might be the final missing link. Will keep you posted.

Thanks again

Testosterone was my missing link for brain fog, energy levels and libido. Oestrogen on its own couldn't do it.
I think it combined with the oestrogen to make me calmer as well though I was a lot calmer when I got on the right hrt.
