Longest period ever!
« on: September 08, 2019, 10:45:59 AM »

So I have nearly completed 4 weeks of continuous bleeding. Sometimes it seems about to stop then continues again with avengance.

I saw a Dr 10 days ago (about another matter) so mentioned it and he said if it continues for another 2 weeks go back, so have an appointment for the 17th.

Prior to this period I had not had one for 41 days and before this was regular every 22/23 days.

I am nearly 53, occasional hot flushes (although less than they were 2 years ago), anxiety is very bad at the moment and very achy joints.

Has anyone else had a period which has lasted so long?

Hi, sorry to hear this. I was a bit different but had periods every 26 days with horrendous cramps. I had my daughter and went on to have a non stop seven month period which was heavy.
I tried the pill and everything but after seven months went in for a D&C to stop it.
Then periods were fizzling out and meno hit. Xxx

Hi purpleflower and welcome to the forum!

Irregular periods are common in peri and it's likely you are coming to an end of your periods. I'm assuming you're not taking hrt? Any other medications?

4 weeks is a long time! Has it been heavy bleeding?

Have you ever had a scan of womb? It could be that you have fibroids? Just thoughts..

Hi. My longest was just over 7 weeks and four weeks in I got all of the symptoms of another period starting even though I was still bleeding from the last one. It was a very weird time!

No not taking HRT the Dr said it might be something I wanted to think about and no other medication.  The bleeding is not continually heavy, although it has been on occasions but sometimes seems about to stop, then starts again!  No scan but to be honest I saw the GP after two weeks of bleeding and he has told me to go back if it doesn't stop.

Probably completely unrelated but I did have a spell of prolonged bleeding after my second child was born can't remember exactly how long it was for, however I know I was still bleeding at my 6 week check and the Dr put me on some medication - this was nearly 21 years ago and my memory is not best, but my periods have been very regular since up until this July.

@Taz2 - it's good to known that someone else has experienced this!

I have been getting mid cycle brown gunk in my 2-3 years during Peri plus my periods have been stretched out over a longer period.
The brown stuff worried me so I did go to the GP and get things checked out. As Peri continued the period and mid cycle discharge time lengthened so it did feel like it was a continual period for the first 2.5 weeks of the month. Also went to the GP with this. It is very confusing in Peri what is ' normal' for us as we are all different.

So I've been back to the Dr who has referred me for a scan and blood tests.  I've been bleeding for well over 5 weeks now.  Dr said it was very common but that they needed to rule out anything else - very anxious at the moment!

So I had an ultrasound scan today after over 7 week of continuous bleeding (which has got worse in the last week).  Bloods were done a week ago and are all normal.

I asked the sonographer if she could see anything and she just said that would have to take a closer look and send report back to GP to see how she wanted to go forward?  I'm sure the GP said when I saw her originally that if they found anything at ultrasound I would be referred to gynae but does this referral go through the GP or does the ultrasound dept refer.

I have already booked an appointment with the GP for next week and the report will be with her in 2 days.

Everyone I've spoken to says they will tell you at the ultrasound if they found anything (cysts fibroids etc) and refer you, does anyone else know if this is the case please?

Oh PF bless you, it's so hard waiting for results :(

When I had an ultrasound for pelvic pain about 3 years ago (OMG, an internal one, those probes :O ) the sonographer told me there and then that she had found a small fibroid. I believe that was then verified in the letter from the outpatients to the GP.

One would think if they had seen anything that needed urgent treatment they would have contacted your GP. Can you call them on Monday/Tuesday and see if the results have come in? Explain that you are anxious about the results, I'm sure they will understand.

Easier said than done but try not to panic  :bighug:  x

Thank you @Mogster71 - I will likely contact the GP next week as she should have the report on Tuesday.  I was hoping to be told at the scan because like you, others I know have been told then and there.  That being said maybe hospital policy has changed, I heard the young lady that came out before me tell her Mum she had to wait for report to go to Dr.  (I was lucky to get the scan yesterday.  The GP told me.that it would be within 4 weeks but as the bleeding had increased I just rang the dept. on the off chance to check the waiting time and when they rang back was told it was 5/6 weeks, however, they had cancellations for the following day.)

No need to thank me PF, there's nothing worse than being anxious about results so I completely understand!

If your GP had said the wait times were within 4 weeks then this doesn't sound like they were unduly rushing you in. I had a similar situation about 8 years ago when I had an abnormal smear and they got me in for laser therapy, the hospital happened to have a slot that evening so of course I panicked like hell about it! (everything was ok, they just had a gap!!). Definitely phone your GP my dear, they should understand why you would of course be anxious.

Keep busy, my house gets a lot cleaner when I'm worried/annoyed/got the ump with husband ;) x

Yes I guess that is true I hadn't thought of that the Dr didn't rush me in for a scan - I will try to keep busy the house could do with a good clean  ;) x

I had one for 7 months, it was after the birth of my daughter, I had to get a D&C in the end which lead to menopause. Xx
