HELP! New to HRT

Hi, I'm 58 and so far have pushed through without HRT ever hopeful one day the end would be in sight. However lots of stressful things have happened and are on going since the beginning of the year and all the hot flushes etc are still going strong. I visited my GP last week who suggested I would be a perfect candidate for HRT. I'm a bit concerned with my age whether I should try it and whether I will see any benefits or just keep going. I was prescribed Femserve Conti, which has proved unavailable and now have been prescribe Evorel Conti as an alternative. I mentioned to my GP that I have suffered a lot of hair loss and thinning and so wouldn't want anything that might contribute to that but I've read one of the side effects of Evorel Conti is hair loss! This seems complete minefield to a newbie like me I would be grateful for any advice and indeed whether I should go ahead or not.😀

Hi Evorel Conti is in short supply too so you might have problems getting them.
You might be better on Oestrogel and Utrogestan. You should see benefits with hrt. xx

Lack of oestrogen can cause hair thinning too so it's really a case of try it and see. Just remember that most people won't suffer hair loss from evorel. Yes it's a minefield and there's no way of telling which hrt will suit you and which won't, you just have to try them.

I read a really good article on how testosterone, oestrogen and DHEA in women can combine to produce DHT which contributes to hair loss. It contributes to mail pattern baldness in men and can contribute to hair loss and hair thinning in women during meno.
When I have it straight in my head I will put on a separate post. xxx
DHT stands for Dihydrotestosterone for those of you scientifically minded, who can't wait for the post

Hi Jj
I think the guidelines are that as long as your are under 60 or within ten years of your last period, it should be fine to start HRT. No one can say categorically that it will work it's magic as we are all different and it works better for some than for others. Also there are so many types it can take a while to find the one that works for you.
I am 57 and like you had been struggling for years with various symptoms. Eventually got to the point earlier this year where I just wasn't coping so took advice, did my research and decided to give it a go for 3 months. Am mid way through now and have to say I am beginning to feel more like my old self which is a huge relief as for a while I seriously thought I was going mad.
Good luck whatever you decide and remember there is always tons of help on this fab forum.

Hi JJ, you mentioned you've had a lot of things happening lately. Is that a possible cause of the hair loss, or was this happening before.
Ladybt mentions DHT which is also another possible cause. It is made from male hormones and causes the hair to become thinner and fall out. This is called androgenic alopecia. If you have enough SHBG it will attach to testosterone and stop it converting to DHT.
If you can inc more phytoestrogens in your diet aswell as lignans, it will help your body produce more SHBG.
It's also important to make sure that your blood sugar is stable as SHBG gets blocked by insulin. X

JJ
I've suffered from hair loss for years it started when I took a short course of omeprazole for a stomach issue 3 months later half my hair fell out! It grew back eventually but never as thick as it was. I took Elleste Duet Conti for a few months and noticed a lot of thinning especially at the temples and sides. Changed to Angeliq (now discontinued) and my hair started to thicken up.
Elleste contains norethisterone which seems to be the cause of hair loss for some women, I'm pretty certain it was the cause of mine.
Evorel contains norethisterone so it wouldn't be my choice if I was prone to hair loss. I'm now on Femoston Conti and hoping it'll be ok for my hair, time will tell.
As we all react differently it's really a case of trial and error unfortunately.

JJ, I wouldn't have Evoral Conti if i were you, i was only taking it for 4 weeks and lost lots, even have several almost bald patches,i did mention to my Dr about side effects he said they all say that, but i agreed to try it, wish i hadn't
Dont have anything with Norethisterone as a progestrone, it is a very harsh one
If you look at the list on HRT preperations on her you will see which of them have it
