Back pain
« on: August 05, 2019, 06:22:45 PM »

I have been taking HRT patches - continuous combi - for 4 weeks now - two weeks ago I woke up with the most horrendous pain across my upper back - no position could give me relief from the pain - it felt like everything inside was being squashed & tight - once up and moving about the pain eased - just a niggly ache as if my bra's a bit tight.   Since then I have woken up after a few hours sleep in absolute agony in the same place and the only way to stop this is to get up - some nights I'm pacing the floor at 2/3 am.  Other symptoms is a feeling of bloating towards the end of the day.

I'm getting distraught (docs today) as my father died from pancreatic cancer so as you can imagine I'm convinced that's what it is.

I've been reading on here about other ladies with back pain & wondered if anyone was suffering the same on the patches or any HRT so that I can put my mind at rest???

Hi cfc1963, Yes I have had occasional back pain, lower & upper (across bra strap area), generally less aches & pains since being on HRT and also started taking Turmeric as I've had an impinged shoulder previously which has been niggling in the last month. The most likely thing causing the pain is muscle strain & I've learned over the years you don't need to have been doing anything extreme/memorable for it to aggrevate, the most simple thing can set it off. I also suffer from IBS & reflux so get bloating on a regular basis, again much improved on HRT, probiotics & also I have lost weight/changed my diet. Can you self refer to physio in your area or MSK (muscleoscelatal service) they have an online advice page too. If you are able to try some simple pain relief, ibuprofen & paracetamol and if you can get a nice massage that might help. If the pain is unbearable you might need something stronger prescribed by GP for a short time but make sure you keep moving as much as you are able, the worst thing to do is to be inactive.
The other thing is that it could be reflux that is causing your pain although generally it tends to be chest pain. It sounds like you need some reassurance given I hope the dr provides that for you. Take care, keep posting on how your doing. x

Thanks for your reply - doctor gave me liquid morphine this morning as nothing I took was easing the pain (husband has all sorts of prescription drugs following sciatica last year). It's only when I wake up (or it wakes me more the case) that the pain is excruciating - this has been every day for the last 10 days. But I get yr point about moving about as when I get out of bed and start moving about it does tend to start easing off.

I will update on here - and yes it's the reassurance that I need as I remember vividly my dad's suffering - mis diagnosed upper back ache in the same place  as me now - and when he finally got his diagnosis it was far too late - he died 3 weeks later.  So you can imaging my thought process atm 🙁

I can't self refer for physio - I'm seeing my doc again next Monday for HRT review and he'll have my bloods back then. Fingers crossed xxx

That's good re oromorph, hopefully it will do the trick, just watch you might need to take a laxative with it morphine, codeine etc can make you constipated (last thing you need with sore back to be straining). Did GP tell you to take it regularly for a few days rather than waiting for excrutiating pain? Glad you have a review next week, take care. x

Sorry pressed post before I'd added in to say I'm really sorry about your dad that is awful & understandably that will have an impact on how you view your health etc.

Thank you foxy lady - he told me to take as little as possible - so tonight I'm going to take a very low dose before I go to bed shortly rather than wait till it wakes me up 😩 and see how it goes xx

I hear ya! For the last four weeks I have had the most awful back pain. Right across the upper middle. I sometimes get left shoulder pain when I'm feeling stressed or when a cold is about to hit. But this is something else! It goes during the day as I move but it's horrendous every morning. I'm on oestrogel and Progesterone and I'm monitoring it to see if it goes

Kdee69 - Omg - that is me exactly!!! The pain is unbearable but after a few hours and morphine it eases off - this is now almost 2 weeks & completely out of the blue. Please please keep me posted on how things progress with you XX

Foxy lady - first night I slept really well but the pain on waking was as bad as ever - same last night - I'm just waiting for the post now with a scan apt - I should get my blood test results tomorrow & I have HRT review on Monday so will discuss again then.

I've got my step sons wedding this coming Saturday - morphine so no alcohol!!! 😩 xxx

If you have any morphine left over  ;)

Lack of oestrogen may cause muscles 2 become lax = aches and pains.  Does an over the counter pain relief ease symptoms?

Make sure that you sit correctly and that your foot wear is appropriate for your age  ;) I could cure half the World's back pain simply by advising on shoes!!  And posture.

Enjoy the wedding. Don't dance in stilettos!

Hi CLKD - I can barely walk in stilettos let alone dance!!! The bride has rose gold flip flops for the ladies in the evening 🥰🥰

Over the counter medicine doesn't even come close to easing the pain - the morphine does improve it slightly.

It's first thing in the morning when it's excruciating - it feels like I'm wearing a bra several sizes too small & everything in that region is squashed outside & in - once I'm up and about the pain starts to fade.   It's almost like something squashing against my spine & my chest whilst I'm lying asleep - then as I move about it moves away - that's the only way I can describe the feeling. Xx

OUCH!  Do you sleep face down?  Do you get stuck in one position which would exacerbate any pain.

How dancers in Strictly walk across the floor in *those* heels let alone dance

Is your pillow comfy?  That can cause back pain ....... maybe take pain relief 30 mins. B4 bed?
