Has anyone come off the Minipill (POP) in their 40's ?
« on: July 26, 2019, 09:13:57 PM »

Ladies,
Has anyone come off the minipill (prog only pill) in their 40's after prolonged use ?
What side effects (if any) did you have ?
How long did it take to feel normal ?
Anybody's experiences would be good the hear. I don't know if what I'm suffering is because of stopping Cerelle, or peri-menopause. And I don't know how long to wait for things to get better.
I've just turned 47, was on the minipill for 11/12 years and stopped 3 months ago.
Thanks. x

I came off COC at 49, and had to take cerezette but didn't get on with it at all.

I felt fine without it for a while and thought it was all over, then I think my ovaries woke up  ::)

I have been taking sequential HRT since 51.

I came off cerazette about a year and a half ago after being on it for about 18 years.  I had a period 2 months after coming off it.  I'd had lots of strange symptoms since I'd hit 40 and came off it to see what would happen.  I later realised these symptoms were probably due to the peri menopause. I've had a regular, albeit very short period each month for the last year and a half now but I am struggling with tiredness, the other awful symptoms disappeared.....sleep hallucinations, hot sweats and body vibrations at night, recurrent sinusitis, the tinnitus hasn't gone though.  I'd love to try HRT but the slightly increased BC risk still worries me.  Hope you find something to ease your symptoms pants46.

I was put on POP at around 52 and the dose was doubled to stop heavy and prolonged bleeding which resulted in me becoming anaemic. Also making my life miserable and near impossible to work. The double dose did work, however I was the put on elleste duet 2mg to ease my menopausal symptoms.
The strange thing is I seem to be intolerant of the progesterone side of the elleste duet and yet not when on double dose of the POP ????
Any ideas ladies ???

Sally, thank you for your response. Can I ask - did your symptoms get worse before they got better ?
My story is quite complicated. I have been on the POP for about 11 years, with no problems and no peri symptoms that I can recall. Had one ovary removed at the end of January and got issues within 36 hours - cold flashes, hot body parts, painful joints, anxiety and terrible fatigue. After 6 weeks I tried ADs for the anxiety, without good results.  Tried HRT - Evorel Sequi, half patches. Was still on the minipill for the first month. Then stopped that and carried on with the half patches for another month and a half.
Stopped the HRT 5+ weeks ago. Wanted to see whether my other ovary would kick in. I think it has, as I have had a bleed.
But my symptoms are just as bad as they have been. In fact, probably worse than in the first few weeks.
So now I don't know what to do.
Am I suffering because my estrogen levels have been surpressed for so long (I didn't know that the POP suppresses ovulation, I do now). If that's case, will my body adjust ? how long do I wait ?
I'm really tempted to go back on the POP, but I have messed up my body so much over the last few months.
Can anyone tell me - which way is up ??  ;)

Hi there, my symptoms didn't get worse before they got better when I came off cerazette.  It may have just been a coincidence that I felt better when I stopped the mini pill.  I'd heard that the progesterone only pill can make your peri menopause symptoms worse as is can upset the balance between your progesterone and oestrogen.  Maybe you haven't found the right HRT regime for you yet.  The oestrogen gel is often recommended as you can adjust the dosage and obviously used with something such as Utrogestan if you have a womb.  X
