Utrogestan, I have a rather delicate question!
« on: July 11, 2019, 07:39:28 PM »

I've been prescribed oestrogel and 100mg utrogestan, the latter to be taken days 1-25.
Will I get a bleed on this?
Why does it need to be taken on an empty stomach? This will be nigh on impossible!!
If I insert rather than swallow, what happens regarding “marital activities”?

Hi taking it for days 1-25 is the post menopause dose, but up to date advice is that you should take it every day without a break. You should not get a bleed on this regime if you are post meno but you can get breakthrough bleeding for first 6 months.

You should take it on an empty stomach as food increases the absorption. Take it just before you go to bed.

Can't help you on the vaginal route as I take it orally xx

Hi Doris

I would say most women who use it vaginally take it cyclically to avoid that problem. I wouldn't want to take it continuously like this because of the activities you mention, due to potential dilution or interference from other bodily fluids  ::). I don't think there is research on this! Depends on the frequency of those activities of course too ::), so even if taken cyclically and if these activities are frequent - I'm not sure? Sorry that sounds vague!

The gut will be full if one takes it before bed  :-\

Empty stomach usually means B4 breakfast and can be very important with some medications.

Hi you should take Utrogestan at bed time as it can act as a sedative. You take it 2 hours after eating x

Tnx.  But that's not an empty stomach ;-).  I can't remember without reading Dr Moseleys book of the gut how long various food stuffs take to clear from the stomach, some stay there hours  :o  ::)

I believe taking any medication on an empty stomach usually means 2 hours after meal. DG x
