Mirena coil and overwhelming tiredness
« on: June 11, 2019, 06:47:19 PM »

Hi all, I had a mirena fitted 3 weeks ago as the progesterone part of HRT due to long and heavy periods, however I have been feeling overwhelmingly tired ever since.  Has anyone else experienced this? And if so did this go away after a while.  I know I need to give the coil 3-6 months but am really struggling with the tiredness.

The progesterone in the Mirena doesn't get into the bloodstream in significant amounts, but.... we're all different, and maybe it's enough to have this effect on you. What I would suggest is that you get your thyroid levels checked, as well as your iron, folates and B12 if you haven't had these blood tests for a while, just to rule these things out.

The progestogen in the Mirena is absorbed systemically and more so in the first few months. Although as anais it is not significant (compared with the mini pill containing the same progestogen), I had a look at the figures for serum levels a while back and concluded it was very approx in the same ball park as a Femseven patch (which also contains the same prog). Some women are sensitivie to synthetic progs or any progs come to that.

I would give it a while if you can and find a way to cope with the tiredness in the meantime (easier said than done!). because it really should do a good job re limiting the bleeding.

Thankyou both, I will stick with it and hopefully the tiredness will subside.
