HRT and number twos!!!
« on: June 08, 2019, 03:14:27 PM »

Hi everyone! I'm hoping that you can reassure me that what I'm experiencing is just a usual side effect!

A few months ago I swapped from HRT in pill form to using patches instead. On the whole, they seem to work better. I'm not feeling fantastic or having a new lease of life or anything, but the symptoms have lessened to the extent where I'm starting to feel closer to my normal self now.

There's just one problem - I've noticed that since switching to patches, my bowel movements have changed. I'm having them three times a day on average and most days I experience diarrhoea. It's all a bit unpleasant, especially as I get quite bloated too. Is this just to be expected as a side effect? Is there anything I can do to stop it happening?

Thanks ladies!!

HORMONES  >:(  ::)

I know that 10 mins. prior to a bleed, even if a period wasn't due, I would have to dash to the loo - 'the runs'.  Is it mentioned in the leaflet in the box?

Is it painful?  Nuisance value only?  Interrupting your daily plans?

Hi Reen. Stomach problems are more likely when using the pill form of HRT as the patches are absorbed straight into the bloodstream whereas pill HRT is metabolised by the liver. I would advise that a chat with the GP would be a good idea just to rule out any other problems. It's horrible having number two problems! Let us know how you get on.

Definitely get any changes in bowel habits checked out, especially “at our age” (don't you just hate that saying, lol). It may well be because of the changes to your HRT and nothing to worry about but the standard advice is to get it checked out by your GP and possibly be referred for some tests to make sure you're otherwise OK.

Thanks everyone! I will mention it to my GP when I next see her. It can be painful with cramping and bloating and it's definitely a lot worse when I do things like go for a run or I'm on my feet all day. It could well be hormones - they seem to be the bane of my life, even now lol!! Thanks again for helping  :)

My motions have definately changed, more frequent and urgent since HRT. Could be a coincidence. I've had a CT colonoscopy but that was clear so I'm attributing it to HRT unless the dr's come up with something else! Definately get it checked out, though. I had the proceedure done within two weeks of going to the GP as it was considered urgent and worrying (also had weight loss) at my age (56)!
