Hi Bluebell. I just wanted to add that I had heart flutters (3am ish) when I'd been taking propranonol for around 3 months.
I too was checked out 24 hr heart monitor and was fine . I came off the propranonol and it disappeared.  My GP thought it could be linked as the drug slows down your heart by widening your veins (I think). I also found it to be worse when I had any alcohol; even one glass so I wondered if the two just don't go.   I agree that stress plays a part as they were worse when I was struggling to sleep or very anxious/adrenaline high. They came back a bit 6 months later (after I had take propranonol again) but the GP did a quick ECG and said all fine.  It is weird it is in the night only, maybe that is when we notice it most. I am in Peri.

Hi Bluebell, never been to Oban although have spoken about it a few times, have distant relatives in Tobermory. Hope the palpitations settle.

Hi squeaker99,  fortunately for me when the palpitations start the propranonol puts them away. 🙏🏽

I too get woken up during the night with them and they are random I get them at anytime.  Sometimes I can go a couple of weeks without them...which is bliss.
They started at 1.30 am the other night and kept going until I took a beta blocker around 6am.
I usually wait to see if they'll go away because I don't particularly like taking medication. Next morning I had to keep taking a big breath which I think is anxiety. Also it makes me rush to the loo with a nervous bowel. 😬
After a bout of them I feel anxious incase I get another one, just a vicious circle.
Started doing mindfulness again so hopefully that should help.

Thanks for your thoughts on it all I really appreciate all the feedback. Better than going to the Doctors
and knowing others are going through similar and it's not just me  gives me some comfort. 🤗

Hi Foxylady, Tobermory is a lovely place to visit I love getting the ferry over.
You must visit Oban sometime - it's called the gateway to the isles.😉

Thanks for replying. 🤗

Hello Bluebell

I am 62 and can be a nervy person but I never had palpitations until the menopause. They were a daily occurrence and became much more intense three years after my last period. With HRT they are less severe but they still happen and create a horrible internal shaking sensation which makes me anxious. When they stop I feel so much better so I definitely think the palps bring on my anxiety. I have a prescription for Propranolol but I rarely take them as I don't notice much improvement when I do.

I plan to ask my GP for help in dealing with these symptoms as they are having  huge impact on my life, it's hard to relax and enjoy anything when your heart is thumping in your chest and your stomach is quivering.

I'm sorry I don't have any solutions but you are not alone with this problem.

Wishing you well.

K.

Hi Kathleen, I'm 65years and 6 years post menopause. The palpitations are my worst meno symptom and like you they have become more frequent lately. I'm keeping a diary and looking at it I've only had a few days here and there when I haven't had them. Sometimes it's the odd one, sometimes they go on all day or all night. They are the reason I get anxious because even though I've had ecg's in the past and been told everything's fine in the middle of the night I think to myself..are they missing something 🤔.

I'm not on HRT....although I wish I had started it years ago.

I do find the propranolol helpful. I've only ever taken 1 a day although I was told I can take up to 3 in a day. 😬  I'm a bit of a coward about taking medication because I'm always concerned about the side effects but I can honestly say the propranolol helped.

You describe exactly what I get. I'm so grateful for you replying... just knowing someone out there is experiencing the same and it's not just me is comforting. None of my friends had palpitations as a menopause symptom so I can't relate to them.

I'm always anxious about doing anything for fear of bringing them on. When I'm busying away and feel that first thump or tremor or flutter I freeze 🥶 and then try to calm down and maybe do a relaxation technique but that very rarely helps.

Let me know how you are - and if you go to your Doctor. x
