Burning Feet - Aching legs
« on: May 17, 2019, 09:35:46 PM »

Hi,
I'm new here and curious as to whether people can relate...
I am just turning 44 and in the last 6 months I have noticed ‘burning feet' - the soles specifically - starts in evening and then overnight. It sometimes persists until morning. It isn't every night...
I am not sure if I am starting perimenopause...Everything else appear normal. Periods are still regular but are getting heavier.  I have also started having sleep
issues - I fall
asleep okay but have many wake ups in the night.
Thought..?

Yep - join The Club  ::)  :welcomemm:

As oestrogen levels drop off the body may become dry inside and out  :o - nostrils, deep in the ears, vagina  :o [we have threads on *that* one], skin and muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Periods may become heavier  >:( - mine waxed and waned for several years then that was it.  Until the skin itching began - across the back of my shoulders as well as the soles of my feet at the end of the day!

I had restless leg syndrome for years and found bananas cured it.

Hello! And welcome!
I'm 47 and started perimenopause at 44.  I had tingling feet, sore hands and feet. Periods got heavier. Digestive issues started. Etc, etc.
I would suggest you go and read the website 34 menopause symptoms. It can really help. Combine that with the wealth of expertise from the ladies on here and you will feel well supported and not so alone.
Now is the time to make sure you are talking plenty of supplements, magnesium, B12, etc. Exercise and keep on top of your weight, if possible.
P.S. I love small purple (blue) cats xx

The aching legs and later burning feet were 2 of the symptoms  which i got first (11 years ago when I was 45). I particularly felt it when i first got up in the morning and then things improved slowly during the day. Only now I am trying HRT to see if it helps (too early to say) because my GP practice was HRT resistant and just came up with other reasons or gave me a sheet of arthritis exercises.
You say that you have many wake ups during the night. Do you then need the loo? You might want to look at the discussions on VA (vaginal atrophy) if this is true. I am sleeping much better now that I am using them.

Been to GP today and she said it sounded like Restless Leg Syndrome...
Blood tests to follow to check hormones, thyroid, iron etc etc.

Restless leg syndome for me is a dragging feeling in the calves, thighs as soon as I get into bed.  I can feel it all day but it is not problematic until I get into bed.  I found that laying with legs up the wall eased symptoms  ::) but when I fell asleep, legs would fall onto Himself.  I also had 2 double thickness blankets and 2 pillows to lay on which helped a bit, or tried hanging my legs over the edge of the bed.  The cure was bananas: several each day ....... for years and years and .......... plus Nurofen B4 bed if we didn't have bananas.

Burning is different and can be related to menopause  ::)

Hi, yeh I have had the burning feet, feet turning red, no joint pain until the last 2 months (knee pain). The thing that is really annoying and puzzled me was the feeling/sensation of spiders running up and down my legs, (L) leg more than (R), very odd. Did get regular cramps in my calves good while back this seems to have settled though.

My restless leg syndrome started with aching legs, I used to say it felt like toothache in my legs. I had bouts of it during puberty, but then it lay dormant until I became post menopausal. Now I keep it on the back burner with hrt and magnesium spray. I tried coming off hrt last year and within two weeks my legs and feet started to play up again and I felt as though there was popcorn popping in my legs below the knees. So, I'm staying on the hormones, I got no sleep while off them.

Ye, I have burning feet and 'locked legs' (I call them).  Part of my issue was cycling and overusing my calves in a certain way without ever doing anything to balance that out - sports massage and changing my shoes helped.  As for the feet, I have a little foot bowl and fill it with warm water, along with something like marigold, lavender, and oil I like the smell of (not geranium!  It's quite stimulating to me and a lot of other people).  Nice soak, then rub calendula cream into them.  Calendula is derived from marigold.  I rather think all of this has a psychosomatic effect, but seems to work for me.

I've been using Menomagic recently (discovered by a reflexologist who used it on his menopausal mum & it helped her sleep). I'm not convinced re the sleep for me anyway but it smells lovely and makes my feet nice and soft, especially the heals. I feel it works better to reduce my flushes if applied to my wrists.

Not going to be a problem here, probably but lavender should not be used by pregnant women.  So I was told by a reflexologist - that was after she had lit lavender scented candles in the room  >:(

Thanks for all replies.
I have had leg pain all day today. Seemed to be just in one leg during the day - a cramping feeling. And then from about 5pm it changed to both legs feeling achey, crampy and so warm - especially soles of feet.

They don't feel restless in themselves but restless
in the sense that I keep
moving them to get comfortable...
Does that sound familiar..?

Can you get it in one leg sometime..? And during the day..?

Restless legs syndrome can be a nuisance at any time ...... try bananas ;-) and a pain relief tablet.

The urge to keep moving your feet and legs is usually what sets restless leg syndrome apart from other conditions, it's an overwhelming sensation that builds and builds until you give in and move them.
It mainly occurs during the evening and nighttime or when at rest. Mine used to feel weird when I sat down during the day too. I can't recall having it in only one leg though.
Go get your bloods tested as a starting point, you may be lacking in iron or B vitamins. Low magnesium levels can also affect RLS and I have found the magnesium spray really helps calm mine down.
