Utrogestan dose which route to take
« on: May 09, 2019, 07:36:09 PM »

Hi. I'm new here done some searching and am unable to  find which route to take. I'm on 100 mg  estradot. doctor has said it ok to take 200 mg of utrogestan every day or I can play around to see which works best. The reason for 200 mg utrogestan to 100 mg estradot is because of break through bleed. She did not mention taking a break. So I'm not sure where to start. Any advice greatly appreciated 😊

The thing about utrogestan is the standard doses are one size fits all - and probably for those in post-menopause the dose is to protect uterus from medium doses of oestrogen and lower, not higher doses like 100 mcg. Hence breakthrough bleeding if higher doses of oestrogen are used, and if oestrogen is well absorbed.

I presume you are post-menopausal? If that is the case the two alternatives are to take it cyclically  (at 200 mg for 12-14 days) and see if the bleed is predicatable and is sufficient to protect your womb, or increase the continuous dose. You could compromise and take the actual licensed duration of the progesterone (25 days out of 28) when taken "continuously" but take the 200 mg.

Actually also depending on route - if you were taking it orally then you could try vaginally - as for the same dose more gets to the womb so should prevent the breakthrough bleeding. However most women would not want to take it this way continuously. If you were already taking it vaginally then no alternative but to increase the dose - or if thids doesn;t work then the Mirena coil should prevent the bleeding.

Hi. Thanks for  information, Yes I am post menopause, 5 yrs now. Doctor has suggested I try out and see what works for me. Just was not sure where to start,  great advice. I'm not taking it vaginally. Will try orally first see how I get on, any thoughts on taking it every other day ?

I found it took several months for me to settle with no breakthrough. I am also on 100mcg estradot. I take 100mg utrogestan every day. I find it's best to take it at a similar time because (like I remember the mini pill) it can cause breakthrough bleeds if not regularly taken

I tried Utrogestan every other day and it felt like my body just got really confused and ended up with constant bleeding. It breaks down much more quickly than synthetic progesterone, so maybe if you're sensitive it only takes 24 hours for the body to register withdrawal. Some others on here use it on alternate days successfully though.

Thanks for the information girls
I had been on estradot 100 mg for 3 months with no problem prior to that it was 50 mg,always been on 100 utrogestan, started tostran at the same time as 100mg estradot so was a bit confused with the break through, not sure what's causing it. So look like it going to be trial and error to get the right dose. I may just stick with estradot and utrogestan at 100 mg and see if it settles down, failing that at least I have other options. I must admit I did forget utrogestan a couple of times so I will make sure I take every day at same time
