my polyp again
« on: April 16, 2019, 09:24:54 AM »

Hello ladies, I posted a while ago regarding a polyp which was detected when I had my smear last year. Dr said they don't tend to remove unless it causes me problem or sleepless nights. It's always on my mind and thought I would ask to have it removed, if the Dr did it at the surgery I would of had it done but I hate hospitals but took up the offer of leaving it alone. However I've been on the cancer research site and  read couple of posts on there forum of women who had them removed and been in the early stages of cancer. Some had hysterectomy even!! And some had scan to see if anymore in there womb as well as there cerviix. In think I need to go and have removed and sorted to give me one less thing to worry about.

Hi Birdy thankyou for your reply. Yes they do seem to be common, what concerns me is that from doing lots of googling, many ladies seem to get referred by there doc to have them removed and others like mine left alone. I went on cancer research web where there is a forum and slot of ladies have had there polyp removed and sent of for testing, some came back ok others different grades of cancer. I really don't like being messed with but at the same time it could be alot worse to deal with if left alone.

Hi Clio, I would just get it removed; it's a simple procedure, just like a smear test really. Then it will be gone and off your mind. Google always throws up horror stories.

I'm sat waiting for 8 o'clock to phone doc, she did say to me at the time if I'm going to have sleepless nights to phone her and she will refer me to have it removed. She did say it was just peeping out of my cervix otherwise they wouldn't of known it was there! I'm on the sick from work at the moment with a broken foot which is alot better now and also I'm due to start some therapy for anxiety as I've got alot of stuff going on I'm finding hard to deal with. I just thought whilst I was off I would get it removed but I'm so mard even a smear test traumatized me but I still go!

I have one, found during a hysteroscopy when I had been bleeding pretty heavily for 3 weeks (I'm 64 long since post menopausal - definitely shouldn't be happening).

Consultant said it was bleeding, & also blocking his view of my fallopian tubes. Biopsies take.

Took over 8 weeks to get result which were benign & I was given a routine appointment to have it removed. That was for last Thursday, & the thing has given me no problems whatsoever & bleeding had stopped day or two after the hysteroscopy anyway.

No surprise to have the removal procedure cancelled by the hospital 2 1/2 hours before my appointment....typical NHS.

Unfortunately, the very next day I started to have pinky reddish discharge, not on a big scale, but still ongoing, hopefully this won't continue until the new appointment, which isn't until mid July!!!

Seemed to me that was standard procedure to remove it once found, there was never any question that it would be left there.

Oddly, consultant said the ultra sounds I had beforehand shows my endometrial lining is 31mm thick, said he considered that "a bit thick", but didn't seem bothered & no mention of what to do about that.

Like you, I've had a little Google & in different circumstances I might be more concerned aboutt that than the polyp.

Went to Jamaica, day after arrival I started bleeding HEAVILY! Seems my polyp had decided to make it's way out for some fresh air, something about half the length of my thumb poking out.  Blood not clotting.

Ambulance to hospital, late evening a full anaesthetic, polyp removed (though consultant said it was huge & more likely a fibroid), & Curettage done, apparently my cervix was already dilated.

Seems at 64 I gave birth to a polyp!  Back at resort late following day, no pain at all (or much bleeding). :-\ No pool/sea for 9 days, but at least plenty of cocktails  :drunklaf: Thankfully covered by travel insurance, bill was US$15,000.

From my experience, have it removed. My NHS removal would have been with a bit of local anaesthetic & home in an hour or two. Cancellation of that led to this.

Hello ladies.

CaptJaneway - your story seems like a tale of two services. The NHS, free but struggling to meet demand or private at a cost of 15,000 dollars. Indeed it was fortunate that you had paid for insurance!

Take care ladies.

Jamaican consultant was pretty scathing about polyp not having been removed when it was discovered. Even more scathing when I said my endometrial lining was 31mm, with nothing scheduled for that. A lot of tutting & sucking in of breath!

Easy to be 'superior' from the safety of being a private consultant as opposed to NHS cracking under the strain though.

I am puzzled by this attitude to your endometrial lining. I had a hysteroscopy this week because a scan showed my lining was 6mm (scan was due to some scant bleeding). I didn't see a consultant but the nurse practitioner suggested that the progesterone was not doing a good enough job at keeping the lining thin.

Are you happy with this inaction? Have you had any bleeding?

My polyp was sent off for testing, but l never did get any feedback, so l assumed all ok.  Don't be surprised if you hear nothing Clio.

For your own peace of mind always follow up the results of any medical tests you have had. Records can get lost, mixed up or mis-read by the medics. I had gallstones many years ago which were considered OK to have at the time of the tests. A month later I required an emergency GP visit. the GP who visited me said from his reading of the scan pictures an operation was required. A week later my own GP apologised and said the results of the scan had been misinterpreted, so I was put on the waiting list to have my gall bladder removed. Please do not assume everything is OK simply because you have not heard anything. Best wishes.
